Sand Creek Massacre - 

Who? Southern Cheyenne Tribe vs. Colorado Volunteer U.S. Cavalry 

When and Where? November 1864. Colorado Territory

Who Won/Why/How? Untied States Army won. black Kettle Flew a White Flag and American Flag about his tepee. 200 Men from the Southern Cheyenne Tribe 400 men for the Colorado Volunteer U.S. Cavalry. They had More men than the Native Americans. They also had superior fire power. 

Leader- John Chivigton... Black Kettle... 

Deaths/Casualties- Southern Cheyenne tribe 70 to 163 killed... Colorado Volunteer U.S. Cavalry 24 killed/52 wounded.. After land

Red River War- 

How it started- Conflict between Natives and Westward Settlers.. Army created forts for settlers... Medicine Lodge treaty of 1867... The natives agreed and stopped their attacks, many moved to reservations... Empty promise(settlers ignored the treaty and hunted in Native American land, buffalo was gone within 4 years food was poor quality).. Natives talked of war, wanted to drive white men out of their land.. Comanche leader Isa-tai stirred his people up.. They saw the only alternative to starvation was war. Isa-tai convinced all the leaders to fight..

Location- Texas and southern planes. 

Winner- U.S army

Leaders- Kiowa leader Lone Wolf. &  Kiowa Leader Pacer. Colonel Nelson A. Mile(.U.S) 
Adobe Walls - June 27, 1874 Early Morning.. 300 Natives had decieded to destory settlement of Buffalo Hunters.. led by Isa-tai and Comanche chif Quarnah Parker.. Planned to catch white men off-faurd and overwhelm them.. 28 huntes Amry and Native
Americans.. Ended rs were outnumbered, but jhad superior weapons... This attack led to new policies.. Proctection of freindly Natives and destruction of hostile Natices.. Encircled Native Americans lands so they couldn't escape.. Manyh more clashes between U.

Battle of the Hundred Slain(Fetterman Massacre)

  • December 21 1866 
  • Happened at front Phil Barney
  •  Happened when the U.S. Army came into the Native American place where they live and the Native Americans didn't like that and fought back 
  • Crazy horse 
  • William J Fetterman 
  • only took 20 minutes and 81 dead 

Battle of Wounded Knee - 

  • Who? US Army & Sioux Indians 
  • December 29th 1890
  • Pine ridge Indian reservation (southwestern South Dakota) 
  • U.S Military won146 Sioux died in the massacre
    • Overpowered 
    • 500 vs 350 
    • better weapons
  • Only about 25 men from the Calvary died
  • Chief Bigfoot
  • Wovoka 

Railroad Prices and Debt(FARMERS)

  • Farms need them to transport goods and bring goods 
  • Railroads charged farmers high prices due to lack of competition 
  • Many farmers mortgaged their farms to by more seed and supplies (usually in Debt)
  • Crop prices fell due to overproduction
  • After the Civil War, the amount of money in circulation went down, so money became more valuable which made it harder to pay back debt.
  • Farmers wanted more money in circulation
    • This would cause inflation which would be good for crop prices

The grange(The National Grange of the order of Patron s of Husbandry) 

  • Organization in the US that encourages families to work together to promote the socia, economic and political well-being. (An organization that helped farmers)
  • Started after the Civil War

Granger Laws 

  • Series of state laws passed in several Midwestern states-Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois- in the late 1860's and early 1870s. 
  • Designed to fight back against railroad abuses
  • Wanted railroads and grain elevators to charge fair prices
  • Munn v Illinois-1877-Supreme Court supported farmers 
  • Wabash v Illinois-1886- Supreme court supported the railroads 

Interstate commerce Act(1887)

  • Allowed the US Government to supervise railroads 
  • Required railroad rates to be "fair and just" 
  • Set up Interstate Commerce Commission to carry out law 
  • Failed to help farmers at first 

Populists Movement-Omaha Platform (1890's) 

  • Help farmers out of debt 
    • Important because they feed the country 
  • Give people a greater voice in government 
    • Important because taking power for the white rich men and giving it to everyone(helping everyone)
  • Increase money supply in circulation(Silverfishes) 
  • Graduated income tax 
  • Direct election of Senators 
  • Single terms for President/Vice President 
  • Secret Ballot 
  • 8 hour work day 
  • Restrictions on immigration
