Thomas Edison- Telegraph was invented when he was 16, allowed sending of signals between unmanned station. Copy machine was invented when he was 33. Phonograph was a record player. Carbon transmitter helped telephone reach farther distances.
Civil war- South Carolina succeeded from union first.
War of 1812- Nobody won war both sides agreed to stop fighting. Led to U.S getting a long with Britain better.
Mexican War- Mexico lost California, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. Huge amount of land we received after winning war.
Louisiana Purchase- France sold piece of land to America for 15 million dollars, needed money, U.S wanted to control port of New Orleans but price was cheap so they bought the whole thing.

10. Native Americans coming across the land bridge.
Point of slaves was to get free labor to make money. Native Americans were killed just to obtain the land that they owned.
9. Christopher Columbus America discovery.
He started off the European settlements. Columbus's crew raped Native American women and destroyed an entire tribe.

8. Jamestown and Colonization
French and Indian war led to Britain needing more money. They enforced taxes on the colonists. Boston Massacre- Britain and Colonists were having an argument and eventually Britain shot and killed some colonists.

7. Declaration of Independence
It wouldn't be until 1783 that we could declare our independence because we had to win the war first. They said that the government should do things that benefit the people. When the government doesn't do those things the people should abolish the government and create a new one. Taxes, quartering soldiers, etc.
6. Revolutionary War
America won the war because they had a reason to fight, better war tactics, America tried harder. Britain didn't put there full effort in.
5. Constitution
Articles of confederation- first government 1783-1789. Failed terribly as a government because the state government had too much power. We didn't want a monarchy. States weren't united, had own currency and taxed other states. They tried to fix the Articles but they ended up scrapping it and creating the constitution. Establishes the three branches of government. Protects our rights. Legislative- Congress(house of representatives- based on population, senate-every state gets two), create laws and declares war. Executive- President(appoints supreme court justices, enforces laws, final say on nukes), vice president, cabinet. Judicial- Supreme court(declares if a law is constitutional or not). Bill of Rights- rights for everyone. One amendment that was repealed. 21st amendment repealed 18th amendment.

3. Texas War for Independence
Mexico decided to open Texas for immigrants for farming. Rules were you had to become roman catholic and couldn't own slaves. Mexico was independent from Spain at this point. The people brought slaves over. They became the Lone Star Republic and then they became a part of the U.S about eight years later.
Mexican American War
Americans said the boundary was the Rio Grande but the Mexicans said it was further north. Americans went to the Rio Grande, Mexico thought it was an invasion so they attacked and began a war. We bought Mexican cession. New territory led to disputes and eventually the civil war.
