Women’s Rights

Women DO ask for pay raises, they just don’t get them

  • Ask as often as men

  • Men are 25% more likely to receive a raise from asking

Myth- gender pay gap is because women are…:

  • Not asking enough

  • Not as ambitious

  • Worried about seeming too pushy

Real difference- women generally don't want to ask because of sexism

  • Women that are pushy are b******

  • Men that are pushy are go getters

Young women under 40 are getting paid better than older women

Men get paid better in every country

Women more likely to miss out on promotions

Experts say it will take 100 years for women to become equal

Pay difference: women get 70 cents for every dollar a man makes

Women do better in school

  • They know they need a higher education to get paid well

  • Guys know they don’t need to work as hard to get paid more

Women are being pushed into the “jobs for women” fields because of society’s standards

Women have always been second class

Example of equal pay:

  • Teaching salary doesn’t consider a teacher’s motivation or hard work

  • Salary is affected by 2 things:

    • Years of experience

    • Education (extent of college degree)

Coaches don’t get paid more to go onto playoffs in our school sports

Money

India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, gives $20 billion to mobile networks to provide internet for millions

(extreme poverty- if you make below $1.25 a day.

1.44 billion people live in extreme poverty)

Vast Opportunities:

  • Entrepreneurship

  • Education

  • Communications

  • Opens doors for people

Teen pregnancy has dropped by 33%

  • Ages 15-19:

    • 2007-2011: fell by 25%

    • 2007-2013: dropped 36%

Abortion rates are declining as well

Contraceptives are being used more frequently

  • Better quality contraceptives

Apple- iPhone 7

Introducing iPhone 7

No headphone jack

You receive a chip with wireless headphones

Bluetooth headphones:

  • Can be inconvenient

  • Don't always work correctly

Easier to lose (especially with the chip)

Racism- Math

Math is racist

Data is “driving” inequality

Expansive data is “targeting” the poor and minorities

Cathy O’Neil wrote Weapons of Math Destruction

-Math is needed to prove arguments(!!)

Colin Kaepernick continued…

His jerseys are the highest in sale

But people would assume the opposite

Thursday-

Politics

Hillary Clinton- why she's going to win

  • Advantage of votes from:

    • African Americans Hispanics Minorities

    • Women Young people

  • All about the states: Electoral College

    • Number of electoral votes per state depends largely on population

    • The electoral votes determine the outcome of the popular vote

    • All electoral votes of a single state go towards the same candidate

    • It’s possible to win the votes of more states, and still lose popular vote

If a candidate wins votes of more states than the other, the other candidate can still win if most of the states who went for the other one were smaller
