Illegal Immigration
General Issue- People are crossing the national borders that violate the immigration laws of the destination country.
Why do people want to come to the US either legally or illegally? Legally or illegally- Family, opportunities, etc. Illegally- Less time, terrorism, drugs
Why do US citizens get upset about illegal immigration? It's not fair to those who came here legally (They have to wait while they just up and came). Taking advantage of the US. Different cultures.
Why is it easy for politicians to ignore the problem of illegal immigration? Especially during elections; Hispanics can vote. They do not want to hurt their campaign.
What is birthright citizenship? If you are born in the United States, you are an automatic citizen. 14th amendment. Trump believes that this is not a good thing.
What are "anchor babies"? Having a baby in the United States is going to put the parents in the front line to citizenship because then the child is a legal citizen.
Obama's Plan-
- MORE BORDER SECURITY
- Deport felons, not families
- Come out of the shadows - Criminal background checks and taxes
- Streamlining legal immigration (Make it easier- should not take 10 years! Make under 5 to 3 years)
- More deportations of illegal immigrants have happened than in our entire country's history
Obama's Speach "Come out of the Shadows"- (Much celebration- still has not happened)
1. Strengthen boarder patrol
2. Make it easier and faster for high skilled immigrants to stay and contribute to US economy
3. Focus efforts on deport illegal immigrants that are criminals
4. If you have been in the US for five years or have children who are US citizens, register, pass a criminal background check, and pay taxes, you can apply to temporarily stay in the US
Trump's Plan (Republican)-
1. Deport all illegals as they broke the law
2. More border security
3. Build a wall
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REPUBLICAN AND DEMOCRATS WITH IMMIGRATION
Illegal Statistics-
- 11.5 million unauthorized people in US in 2014
- 100,000 are from Mexico
- More deportations under Obama than any other president
- Problem is not people, is the border control security
- Come From:
- Mexico (59%) - Not Canada because Mexico's economy is worse
- El Salvador (6%)
- Guatemala (5%)
- Honduras (3%)
- Philippines (3%)
- Young people because if they get a good job/living, they can give their family a better life.
- More males come because they are the head of the household (per say)
- 61% come from the ages of 25-44
- 2013- 438,421 unauthorized immigrants were removed from the United States
Legal Statistics-
- "Green Cards"- given legal citizenship here until you are able to work up to official
- Only thing immigrants CANNOT do... Be president
- Over 990,000 LEGAL immigrants in 2013
Republicans
- Believe providing the immigrants amnesty would only make things worse
- Want stricter penalties for illegal immigrants and those who smuggle them
- Should not have same rights as legal citizens
- See them as burdens
Democrats
- Providing path to citizenship
- People who are already here should come out and admit it... then pay higher taxes, learn English, and get right with the law to become citizen
- support strong supervision for those who broke the law and were criminals
- See them as being a possible strength to our country
