Ch. 5.1:

-Describe Native American culture.

-Why did settlers/people move to the Great Plains?

-How did the US gov't deal with Native Americans in the mid to late 1800's? What were their policies?

-Describe a cowboy's life.


Ch. 5.2:

-How did railroads and the Homestead Act help settle the Great Plains? help go to the west, brought people and goods,

-What challenges did settlers face on the Great Plains? NATIVE american attacks, not enough water, loneliness, wild animals, droughts, flooding

-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains? dry, droughts, not enough rain, grass that had to be removed, hard soil, less money for their crops, Ben Allison act of 1878, greenbags-money without not much worth , farmers called for more paper money, 

Ch. 5.3:

-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains? hard grounds, railroad abuse, wild animal and Native American attacks, insects, farmers get in debt after not earning enough money 

-Who were the Populists and what did they believe in? peoples farmers, the rich , aimed at the common people, started in Omaha, Nebraska, were not very successful as a party, progressive party, help farmers out of debt, give people a greater voice in government, Increase money supply in circulation, graduated income tax,wanted inflation, money back by gold, normal people fighting against the rich white men, give a bigger voice in government


Ch. 6.1:

-What caused the Industrial revolution to really take off in the late 1800's? Oil, Bubbles showed up and he knew that there was oil underground, January 1901, the oil boom begun, Natural resources fuel Industrialization, 1920, 60 years after the civil war it had become the leading industrial power, a wealth of natural resources, oil, government support for business, and a growing urban population that provide both cheap labor and markets for new products

-What were some new inventions in the late 1800's and what affect did they have on people's lives? The light bulb, telephone, typewriter, women workers, steel, air in iron to make steel, 


Ch. 6.2:

-What impact did railroads have on the US? better faster transportation, time zones, brought forth giant coporations, jobs, helped settle the west

-Why were many people upset with the railroads? farmers in debt, too expensive, farmers hid hard, wiped out towns and villages, hard work and low money earning, farmers were upset: expensive, could charge whatever they wanted, 

-What did the Grangers or government do to regulate the railroads?several laws were passed, candidates, regulated the prices and industries, group of farmers, trying to fight back to railroad regulate, farmers fighting against railroads, 


Ch. 6.3:

-Tell me about Andrew Carnegie.- steel

-Tell me about John D. Rockefeller.-oil

-What was Social Darwinism and how did it apply to business? Charles Darwin evolution theory, same with business, businesses shouldn't be controlled, they should grow as they go without being interrupted, unregulated marketplace, survival of the richest, the idea businesses should be not controlled, survival of the richest because they can overpower the small, rich>government, few rich and more poor, 

-Explain how companies formed monopolies(vertical/horizontal integration, trusts). horizontal buy out other steel companies, his prices low vertical- would  buy out their suppliers, so other people cant compete it, 

monopoly- the exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service, trust

-How did the government try to regulate business?

-What are labor unions and what is their purpose?

Were labor unions successful in achieving their goals? Explain/Give examples.

Help farmers out of debt

- give people a greater voice in government

- increase money supply in circulation

- graduated income tax

- federal loan program

- direct elections of senators

-> people vote senators

- Single terms of president/ v.p.

-> limits for presidential terms

- secret ballot

-> Australian ballot, secret elections, more freedom for people to vote the party they want to vote, no pressure 

- 8 hour work day

-> working 8 hours a day, prior 12/7 , first wants to push for it, 

- restrictions on immigrations'

-> golden age of immigration, take wages low and have more jobs, 

Wed:

- laissez faire - a policy or attitude of letting things take their own course, without interfering

Thu:

- government trying to control railroads
