Week of September 19-23

Monday: New forum post leaders and stories, continued notes on ancient Greece

  • Greece is surrounded by the Mediterranean sea, Ionian sea, Aegean sea  
  • The rest of Greece is made up by islands 
  • Greece flourished because of the seas surrounding them, they lived off it, it provided them with everything 
  • very mountainous region, 3/5 mountainous regions 
  • The Greeks were into trading 
  • Did not have much fertile land 
  • The population was not very large compared to other civilizations 
  • City-state based areas, cities ruled by rulers, no one ruler ruled over Greece 
  • The lowest temperatures are around 50 degrees, very tropical and warm climate 

Tuesday: Continued discussion and note taking on Ancient Greece 

  • Greece was originally based of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations 
  • The Minoans were known for their advanced cities and peaceful ways
  • many archaeologists and historians believe that Atlantis was the Minoan empire 
  • Their empire was ended abruptly
  • The Mycenaean were pirates 
  • War based empire and people 
  • Dorian's took the Greeks into the Dark Ages
  • The Dorian people came from the north 
  • The Trojan war considered a war based in the city-state of troy 
  • Troy was located in modern day Turkey 
  • Started because the kings brothers wife was taken and they fought to get her back 

Wednesday: Continued Notes on ancient Greece and chatted about extra credit opportunities a little bit

  • Polis - means city 
  • Acropolis - a raised temple were meetings of politics and religious events would occur
    • if attacked they would retreat to the acropolis for defense and safety 
  • Types of Governments 
    • Monarchy - King and Queens rule 
    • Aristocracy - Noblemen and wealthy rule 
    • Oligarchy - A small group of powerful people rule
    • Tyrant - Ruler or Dictator who absolutely rules and does whatever he wants; seize control from the government 
    • Democracy - When the people Rule 
    • Militray -state - Ruled by the military 
      • Direct Democracy - Straight from the people 
  • Athens was the first democracy 
  • Only sons of wealthy families were allowed to attend school 
  • started at age 7 
  • Studied: reading, grammar, poetry, history, math, music, logic, and public speaking 
  • Sparta was more militaristic than Athens 
  • Spartans were military state very powerful people who had their own army 
  • Spartans valued war 
  • Athens valued Knowledge
