Week of September 19-23

Monday: We discussed forum posts. We continued our notes.

Tuesday:  We continued with notes. We also watched a video over the theories of Atlantis.

Wednesday: We continued with Notes.

Notes:

  • Greece is a small country in Europe
  • Peninsula
    • piece of land that is surrounded by water
    • Greece is made up of 6000 islands
    • Mediterranean sea, Aegean Sea, and Ionian Sea
  • The sea was important to Greece b/c
    • they did not live on the land but around the sea
    • used for fishing, trade, self defense, transportation- lack of resources
  • 3/4 of Greece are mountains
    • Mt. Olympus
      • home of the 12 Olympian Greek Gods
  • Mountains caused Greeks to not be able to farm
  • never had a large population
  • transportation was hard because of mountains
  • some leaders looked to expand Greece
  • Greek city-states
  • Minoans 
    • 2000-1500 BC
    • Crete
    • heavily influenced by Egypt and Mesopotamian civilizations
    • named after legendary Crete King Minos of Greek mythology
    • known for trade on the seas
    • generally peaceful
    • known for advanced cities
      • plumbing, toilets, sewers
    • women having much higher status in earlier civilizations
      • known for their art and pottery
    • Downfall
      • around 1500 BC, ended abruptly
      • could have been an earthquake
      • could have been over ran by the Mycenaean
      • could have been Atlantis
  • Mycenaean
    • 1660-1100 BC
    • Mainland- Greece
    • heavily influenced by Minoans
    • more war like
    • trade through the sea
    • known for piracy on the seas surrounding Greece
    • known for city-states
  • Olympics
    • Olympiads- every 4 years
    • they did some sports in the nude
  • The had nice weather all year round= outside people
  • Plato
    • Greek philosopher 
    • only known source discussing location of Atlantis
  • Polis- city
  • Monarchy: government ruled by one person -king, queen
  • Aristocracy- gov't ruled by a small group of wealthy landowning families
  • Oligarchy- a gov't ruled by a few powerful people
  • Tyrants- powerful individyuals who seize control from the gov't 
    • could be good or bad
    • today we tyranny as bad
  • Democracy- ruled by the people
    • Athens had perhaps the World's first democracy
  • Education in Athens
    • only for sons of wealthy families
    • started at age 7- focused on developing good citizens
    • studied reading, grammar, poetry, history, math, music, logic, and public speaking
