Why did people move to the west?

Manifest Destiny - was a belief that god wanted the people to move west

Homestead Act - act that give 160 acres to farmers and land owners

1880 - 15 million buffalo

1870 - 1,000 buffalo

2000 - 260,000 buffalo

Cattle Ranching + Cowboys

Peaked between 1867 - 1880

25% of cowboys were ex-slaves

Life of a cowboy - lonely + dangerous

Cattle industry fell when the price of beef fell

Why were long drives necessary?

Because there were no railroads at the time

Why did they come to an end after only 15-20 years>

Because of railroads

US Native American Polocies

  • go to war with then
  • push them onto reservations

Indian and Oklahoma Territory Merge in 1907 forming State of Oklahoma

Dawes Act (1887) -

  • Gave land to Native American families to farm
  • Ended tribal ownership of land
  • Those that do this will be granted US citizenship
  • Goal was to "Americanize" Native-Americans
  • Native-Americans lost much of their land
  • Not required but the other option was not good (death, war, etc.)
  • Ended in the 1930's under President Roosevelt's Indian Reorganization Act
