Assimilation, way of making Native Americans white or stripping them of their culture

We wanted Native Americans to be like us so we didn't have to fight them

Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854 pushes Indian tribes further west

Indian and Oklahoma Territory Merge in 1907 forming state of Oklahoma, Government opened up Indian and Oklahoma territory for settlement

Destruction of Buffalo- away to eliminate the Indians

Dawes Act 1887- Gave land to Native American families to farm- 160 acres per family

Ended tribal ownership of land

Those that took this land were granted U.S. citizens

Goal was to Americanize Native-Americans

lost much of their land

Not required but better option

Ended in the 1930's under President Roosevelt's Indian Reorganization Act
