Wednesday- Worked on Presentation
Thursday and Friday- Started the presentations and took notes.
Chapter 5 Section 1-
- Horse and Buffalo were very important to them. The Buffalo was very important to them because they could us the hides for many things such as Blankets, Shoes, Tepees, Etc. And they would dry out the meat for jerky.
- Family Life-Young men were trained to be warriors. Young women would to the house work. They believed that everyone was together no one person owned the land. They believed there were spirits that controlled everything.
- Settlers push westward- They went westward to get gold. And they believed that Native Americans didn't have the right to own land because they didn't take care for it.
- Set aside plains for Native Americans- and the government then decided to change the rules and give boundary's to each tribe.
- Sand Creek Massacre- They didn't like the Indians because they wouldn't let them go west they then attacked the Cheyenne and Arapaho and then that was the turning point for the relationship between the Americans and the Native Americans.
- Bozeman trail- Didn't want the white settlers on the trail and ambushed settlers until the government closed the trail.
- The treaty of Fort Laramie- Was between the Us and The Sioux Nations to bring peace. Gave ownership of the Black Hills to the Sioux Nation. Then the gold rush happened and we broke that agreement.
- Bloody Battles Continue- Remove the southern tribes and move them west so they attacked them.
- Gold Rush 1874- George S Custer and his men came to the Black Hills in the search of gold.
- Battle at little big horn- Indians didn't want the white settlers on the land so they let the american settlers be there. And they redrew the boundaries for the indians and that just made them that more ticked off.
- By 1932 white men took up 2/3 acres of reservations that was supposed to be set aside for natives.
- Battle of Wounded Knee- Killed 40 native Police Officers. 350 Sioux taken to Wounded Knee forced to give up there weapons. Over 300 unnamed natives were slaughtered by the American Calvary.
- Cattle Become Big Business- Herds of Buffalo disappeared. Horses and Cattle came in to the lands. Americans learned from Mexicans how to herd large herds.
- Cow Town better route, business more than doubled from 35,000 to 75,000. Cow town Dodge City, Denver Colorado, Cheyenne Wyoming.
- Day in the life of a cowboy- 55,000 Cowboys. There weren't railroads in the south at the time so they had to drive them north.
- Destruction of the Buffalo- less than 1000 remained after 1890.
