Reconstruction

1865-1877

Time after the Civil War when the South had to be rebuilt (Economically,socially,politically,and physically) and reorganized to be brought back into the Union

Slaves accounted for a large support of the South's economy

Families had to be reunited to morn

Cities had to be rebuilt

South's government had to be rebuilt 

Abraham Lincoln wanted to forgive and forget 

Johnson takes over for Lincoln after his death

The South was split into five districts that were occupied by the military 

13th, 14th, 15th amendment passed

13th- Abolished slavery

14th- Made black citizens and gave them protection from the law

15th- Gave black males the right to vote

Woman didn't get the right to vote till around 1920 

Freeman's Bureau created to help former slaves

Southern governments taken over by "carpetbaggers" and "scalawags"

Southern governments set up schools, raised taxes, built railroads, helped ex-slaves, and industrialized the South

Reconstruction should have lasted longer 

During this time blacks did better than any other time in history

Left deep divisions between the North and South

When the military left the south rich, white, males took over

Jim Crow laws and segregation was established

African-Americans didn't get the rights they deserved until 1964 

Election of 1876

Rutherford B. Hayes vs. Samuel J. Tilden

Tildon won the popular vote and was leading electoral vote

Unwritten deal between the North and South ended reconstruction and Hayes became president

Hayes removed troops from the South and ended reconstruction within a year
