Reconstruction -
1865-1877
The period of time after the Civil War in which the South had to rebuilt and reorganized and brought back into the Union.
Rebuilt south economically, socially, politically, and physically.
Economically- Slavery was gone so they didn't know what to do know.
Socially- Family's and friends split apart and slave family's trying to reunite with their family.
Physically- Buildings had to be rebuilt.
President Lincoln and Johnson wanted to be easy on the South. He wanted more views and more votes from the Democrat views. Johnson was despised by the Democrat. Johnson was ape-ached. found guilty then went to the cenant and he was not kicked out of office. (The other president would be "Bill Clientent")
That changed in the 1866 Congressional Election.
Radical Republican Reconstruction- Split South into 5 military district controlled by US Army. - 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments passed.
1920 women got the right to vote.
Freedmen's Bureau set up to help former slaves
Southern government taken over by "carpetbaggers" and "scalawags"
Northerners that went South to get a government jobs. Lot of dishonest men looking for money and power.
These governments set up schools, raised taxes, built railroads, helped ex-slaves, industrialized, the south.
Scalawags- Southerns known as traders helping the north that came down to get government jobs.
Government were accused of widespread corruption by southerns. lasted 12 years.
5 military districts to make sure they were following the rules and making sure war didn't break out.
13th-
14th amendments -made blacks U.S citizens and equal rights.
15th-
Reconstruction left very deep divisions between the Northern States and Southern States.
once the Northern governments and military left the South, traditional rich, white racist males took back over.
Jim crow laws and segregation was established- Separating the races.100 Years 1964 the civil right acts started forcing these acts.
African-Americans would not see the rights they should have had in 1865 until 1964.
Ended-1876 Presidential election- Rutherford B Hayes vs Samuel Tilden
Samuel won the popular vote and was leading the electoral vote.
Four states (with 20 electoral votes) had disputed results.
Hayes won.
South hated reconstruction so they were willing to allow Hayes to be the President.
The compromise of 1877
UNwritten deal between Northern and Southern politicians that settled the heavily disputed 1876 U.S presidential election.
republican Rutherford B. Hayes was awarded the White House over Democrat Samuel J. Tilden
Hayes would then remove the federal troops from the South ending reconstruction.

Great Britain and the U.S
Causes-
Impessment - Great Britain was frustrated that naval officers where abandoning there post and going to U.S ships and so they stop U.S ships and take the British people that they said that where there people and took them back to their ships. No one won but no one lost. White house was burned down and James Madison was the president.
Fishing disputes who had the right to fish.
We felt that they were telling native Americans to attack us like in the north West in like Ohio.
