Wednesday-
Hunting and Trapping- they needed food. They hunted buffalo, deer, they trapped beaver. They sold the fur. We got rid of the buffalo so that way the Native Americans would leave. In 1800 there was 15 million buffalo. 2000 there was 260,000. Tongue of a buffalo was used for food, Pelt, clothing and blankets, Bones were used for sewing needles arrowheads, knifes and tools. Stomach was used for buckets and cooking pots.
Mountain Men- explorers/trappers living in the wilderness in the Rocky Mountains, employed by fur companies. US Military- they contained the native Americans in the west- led to many battles called the American Indian wars.
Thursday-
Railhead towns- towns at the end of the railroads. Ranchers- people who owned ranches+ cattle Texas Longhorns- Cross breed of cattle
Long Drive- Herded the cows and moved them Cattle Barons- Bigger Ranchers they would push the small ranchers out 25% of cowboys were ex-slaves
Longhorn steer- cross breed between settlers cattle and Mexican cattle Open Range- there are still some in the US. The long drives was about 1000 miles long Texas to Kansas
Cowtowns- There were traders there were places to sleep and eat. Dodge City, Kansas. People spent lots of many there, they drank, gambled, they had lots of fights gun fights and duels. Abilene, Kansas, Sedalia, Missouri
Law and Order- Wyatt Earp, Wild Bill Hickok
Friday-
Omaha Stockyards- They would bring animals to these stockyards and hauled them on the train. At one point the Omaha stockyard was the biggest one in the world.
The long drives started to stop because there was lots of farming and not as many places for cattle to roam.
