Reconstruction 1865-1877
the period of time after the civil war in which the south had to be rebuilt and reorganized and brought back into the Union.
President Lincoln and Johnson wanted to be easy on the South. Congress started taking control in 1866 because they didn't want Johnson as a President.
The congressional plan- Republican Radical Reconstruction
Rebuilt south
Economically- Lost the people who did the plantations
Socially- families have been destroyed
Politically- North wouldn't let racist demarcates run the south.
Physically- rebuilt cities
Military was sent down south to make sure the south followed the rules
13th abolished slavery
14th gave African Americans become U.S. citizens. equally safety laws
15th gave African Americans the right to vote.
Ex-slaves did small farming or farming for another farmer
Carpetbaggers is a government in the South controlled by Northern people
Scalaways- Southerns that helped Carpetbaggers
Carpetbaggers- stole tax money from the Southern people.
Once the northern governments and military left the south, traditional rich, white racist males took back over.
Jim Crow laws and segregation was established - African Americans were only allowed them to use certain things.
Reconstructions 1877
The Compromise of 1877. Unwritten deal between Northern and Southern politicians that settled the heavily disputed 1876 U.S. presidential election. South said that Hayes could be president only if the North left the South, and it all went back to normal were the African Americans lost their rights.
War of 1812 between American and Britain
