Tuesday: Westward expansion

  • Went west because mining, gold, land, farming, railroads, etc.
  • Dodge City-

  • gunfights, duels, drinking, prostitution, gambling.
  • Wyatt Earp - Sheriff - Gunfight at the OK Corral - Not hurt.

  • Long drives were necessary because there were no railroads. 
  • US Native Americans got pushed into reservations
  • Destruction of Buffalo effected Native Americans

  • Dawes Act- 1887
  • Gave land to native american families
  • Ended tribal ownership of land
  • Those that did that were granted US citizenship
  • Goal was to "Americanize" them
  • Natives lost much of their land
  • Ended in the 1930's under President Roosevelt's Reorganization Act
  • Tried getting natives to go back to their ways: stop forcing them to change
