Ch. 5.2:
-How did railroads and the Homestead Act help settle the Great Plains?- Railroads made it easier for people to travel. People could travel to more places, and foods, and products could get places faster. Offered 160 acres to people to the western part of the country (west of the Mississippi)
-What challenges did settlers face on the Great Plains?- little trees to make houses so they made sod houses.
-What problems did farmers face on the Great Plains?And what were some of the solutions that they had? - How to produce food, how to protect themselves, build a new life, Dry and flat and settlers didn't know what they were doing. Long harsh cold winters, and dry hot summers. Native American's, wild animals. They had barbed wire fences to fence in their farm areas. John Deere invented a steel plow.
Morrill Act 1862-1890. gave federal land to states finance Ag. Colleges. Iowa was the first one Iowa Agricultural College.
Women worked alongside their husband, and did a lot of the mans work. Women did most of the work.
