Week of Sep. 19-23

Monday: 

Greece is a small country in Europe

Is a peninsula

Greece is made up of 6,000 islands (only 227 inhabited)

The sea was important to the Greeks- Trade, Fishing, Transportation, Protection

Mountains made up 3/4's of Greece's land

Transportation was difficult and agriculture was difficult 

Greece never had a large population

Olympics started in Greece

Happened every 4 years

Minoans were first civilization in Greece on Crete then Mycenaeans took over

Named after legendary Crete King Minos 

Known for their advanced cities

Woman had a much higher status than in earlier civilizations 

Tuesday: 

Minoans highly advanced island of Crete

Great art, peaceful, Myceneans came and destroyed them, Minoa was believed to be Atlantis, Trade was important, Isolated on Crete, Earthquake/Tsunami destroyed it, Plato was the only person to write about Atlantis

Myceneans were warlike, Lots of city-states

Taken over by the Dorians

Homer gave information on the Trojan War (fought between Dorians and the Trojans)

Wednesday: 

Polis- city 

Acropolis- a settlement in a city on a higher ground used for defense and a place to discuss politics 

Monarchy- a government ruled by one person

Aristocracy- government ruled by a small group of wealthy, landowning families

Oligarchy- a government ruled by a few powerful people

Tyrant- powerful individuals who seize control from the government 

Democracy- rule by the people (Athens may have had the world's first democracy) 

Education was only for the sons of the wealthy families, starting at 7, (reading, grammar, poetry, history, math, music, logic and public speaking) public debate and athletics were also stressed, once older they went to military school, girls were educated by their mothers in the home to do cleaning, cooking, child-rearing, etc

Sparta

Very powerful and had it's own army, It was a military state, Conquered other city-states for power and wealth, Valued duty and strength and discipline over freedom

Only men born in Sparta were citizens, women were not allowed to become citizens, Second class was foreigners and they could own businesses, third class was slaves

Literacy was not very important, training soldiers was stressed, boys left home at 7 to be soldiers until 30, athletics were stressed very much as well

Women received some military service, athletics were stressed, could run family estates when husband was off at war
