Populists Movement-Omaha Platform (1890's) 

  • Help farmers out of debt 
    • Important because they feed the country 
    • buy things(food) 
    • YES BUT WASN'T THE POPULISTS 
  • Give people a greater voice in government 
    • Important because taking power for the white rich men and giving it to everyone(helping everyone)

  • Increase money supply in circulation(Silverfishes) 
    • Important so their crop prices goes up

    • Had a lot of natural resources(TONS)
    • don't have to buy from other countries 
    • You use natural resource to make stuff 
    • without them you couldn't make anything

What are monopolies and why are they bad for consumers? 

  • Monopolies are where there are only one business 
  • Big business take over small 
  • The exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service 
  • When a company in a specific field tries to get rid of all their competition and control as close to 100% of the industry as possible 

Why are monopolies bad for consumers and small business?? 

-nobody to compete with so they get lazy and don't make the best  products

-once everyone is out of business they can rise their prices -can lead to higher prices due to lack of competition 

-can drive smaller businesses out of business out of business leading to unemployment 

-Can lead to poorer products due to lack of competition 

-less choice for the consumers 

--(positive) lower prices for a period of time

-people that drove people out of business, didn't care about workers, didn't pay workers well

  • started out as poor and become rich 
  • (1835-1991)

  • Gave a lot of money away but yet he treated his workers poorly and terribly

  • Standard Oil 
  • had a lot of control over Government 

Describe Cornelius Vanderbilt's life 

  • 1794-1877
  • Make a lot off ships 
  • known for railroads 
  • retired from ships but got involved with railroads 
  • richest person when he dead 
  • retired from the shipping business at age 64 
  • then created railroads 
  • would be second richest person in us history 
  • Designed grand Central station in NYC
  • famous relatives

  • 1837-1913
  • John Pierpont(JP) 
  • One of the most powerful bankers of his era 
  • Financed railroads and helped organize us steel, general electric and other major corporations 
  • Today his firm is know as JPMorgan Chase
