Week of October 3rd - 7th

Monday (10-3-16)- Continue Notes

Populist Movement- Omaha Platform- 1890's-1896- Farmers factory workers, middle class people against the wealthy. 

Help farmers out of debt- Buy seeds buy machine and over production so they were in debt. They were the ones that fed American. Fight against railroads. (1930's yes)

Give people a greater voice in government- Its important for more people to vote that will benefit people by taking power away from the white rich male and then you will pass laws that will benefit everyone. (yes)

Increase money supply in circulation- Silver ties- So there crop prices go up. Products would be sold at a higher price. (Farmers and laborers) ---- Bankers and Businessmen gold standard/ less $ in circulation. Loans would be repaid in stable money.  William Jennings Bryan- Cross of Gold.  (no)

Graduated income tax- The more money you make the more money you pay. 1913 there was no federal income tax. Flat tax everyone pays the same percent. The rich have to pay more and the government can create more programs that benefit the poor. The middle are being benefited the most. 16th amendment (yes 1913)

Directed election of Senators- Directly elected by the people the senators they are being elected by the people of the State. It gives more power to the citizens. Senators where selected by white rich male that came from the State Legislators State Government. (yes 1917)

Single terms for President/ vice president- Two terms.  22nd amendment limiting presidents. Different ideas. Presidents are for big business and for money. Single term didn't happen  but 2 terms did. (we have double)

Secret ballot- When people go vote so know one can see who you are voting for you go behind an enclosed area. Make sure you were able to vote without anyone looking over you shoulder and judging you. (happened)

8 hour work day- The weekend was a crazy liberal idea. in 1886 7 union members in Wisconsin died fighting for the 5-day work week and the 8- hour work day. Even though the lower class people wouldn't benefit from this people need down time you will be a better worker. (happened)

Restrictions on immigration- populace wanted immigrants to stop coming in. They wanted to keep immigrants limited because they would take their jobs. Racism, might be communist, taking our jobs (did happen)

Industrial Revolution

Key Points

What caused the Industrial Revolution to really take off in the late 1800's?

What were some new Inventions in the late 1800's and what affect did they have on peoples lives?

What helped the Industrial Revolution to Take Place In US?

Tons of natural resources- Gold, Iron, Nickle, Copper, Lead, and Coal- Its important to have a lot you don't have to buy from other country's. You use those to make something.Iron is used to make steel. COAL< IRON < STEEL

Government helped business-  They were out to benefit big businesses and not workers. They left the factory and the business alone. We are not going to put regulations because that will slow business. Laissez- Faire Autocratic- tell people to do this. Democratic- give you a choice. Laissez- Faire they stay out of it so they can make a ton of money and they can expand. 

cities were growing- More people to work and more people to buy. Giving up on farming and moving to the cities. More people to buy your products. Grew too fast because immigrants, farmers moved into the city, African- Americans moved to the cities after the civil War, Cities offered more jobs and opportunities, Cities offered more entertainment/ culture.

Oil Boom- It fueled the industrial revolution

Bessemer process- Cheap way to make steel, Henry Bessemer found a quicker cheaper way to make steel.

Various Inventions - Electricity- light bulb- Thomas Alva Edison

Typewriter- Christopher Sholes revolutionized business

Telephones- Alexander Graham Bell revolutionized business and our community. "Marry had a little lamb" 

Railroads- You needed to ship things to factory's and to transport finished thing.

Transcontinental rr's Omaha to San Francisco. Union and central pacific. Chinese immigrants did their job and worked with dynamite. Government gave them free land for working on the railroad and going through the mountains. Golden spike symbolized coming together because the country didn't seem as big. We have time zones because of railroads- they push for time zones because they needed to be exact and tell people they needed to be in this country at these certain times.

What are monopolies and why are they bad for consumers?- The strong survive smaller businesses are going to fail. Can leads to higher prices due to lack of competition. can doesn't have too lead to poorer products due to lack of competition. Less choice for consumer. Can drive smaller businesses out of business leading to unemployment. Book Def- The exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service. Student friendly definition- When a company in a specific field tries to get rid of all of their competition and controls as close to 100% of the industry as possible. They would under sell and buy everyone else out. They put a lot of small businesses out of business. Horizontal Integration- steel company a buys out company b and c ( a business that buys out other company) vertical- standard oil would own the old fields and they would ship to refinery and then sell their items died out 70's-80's

Captains of Industry- Rich guys that owned big industry they were known as the Robber Barons because they drove other small industry out o business. The power the trusts had over the people.

Describe Andrew Carnegie life.- (1835-1919) Born in Scotland and he was very poor and is known for the Carnegie Steel. He was loved and hated because he put a lot of people out of business. He was the largest steel company of the United States. Philanthropist- he was a rich person who gives a lot of money away for good causes, He is helping out giving a lot of money for library's but then reducing their wages and hours of his workers. 2nd most famous  

Describe John D. Rockefeller's life.- (1839-1937) Standard Oil. He wasn't that wealthy and he made the oil industry in the right place in the right time. He is running the company the capital he uses tentacles as oil pipe lines. Controlling banks and congress. Fueling congress,

How did the Government try to regulate business?- Trust- monopoly. Regulate businesses. Made it illegal to from a trust that interfered with free trade between states. Teddy Roosevelt called himself the trust buster 1st president to go after big businesses. He wasn't president president taf was. Sherman Ant-Trust Act broke up the monoploys. 

Describe J.P Morgans's Life.- (1837-1913) (BANKER) One of the most powerful bankers of his era. Financed railroads and helped organize U.S Steel, General Electric and other major corporations. In 1895, their firm was reorganized as J.P Morgan and Company and today is frim is known as JP Morgan Chase. 

Cornelius Vanderbilt- (1794-1877) Made a fortune in shipping. Retired from the shipping business at age 64. Then created a railroad empire. Was richest person in the US when he died 1877. Would be second richest person in US history- would be worth $200 billion. Designed Grand Central Station (NYC) They were in control of the railroads.
