Buddhism

  • Siddhartha gautama (buddha) was the founder
  • Buddha means " the awakened one"
  • He grew up up in a wealthy family but decided to follow a path of self-denual
  • he didn;t find truth until he sat down under a tree, now known as the Bo tree
  • There he was enlightened and attained the knowledge he had been looking for 
  • he discovered the four noble paths

4 noble  truths

1. Existence is suffering

2. The cause of suffering is craving and attachment

3. Suffering ceases at some point and turns to nirvana

4. There is a path to nirvana which is mad up of 8 steps called the eightfold path

  • About 1% of americans are buddhist
  • Meditation is very important
  • Lotus flower
    • Believe that is can blossom while rooted in the impurity of the world

ISLAM

  • The islamic crescent star
  • islam means "submission (to allah" in arabic
  • "Allah" is arabic word which means "the one true god"
  • Muslims believe that the quran is gods word as revealed to the prophet muhammad through the angel gabriel
  • Muslims do not believe tat jesus was the messiah, although they do believe he was a prophet
  • Islam is family oriented
  • the primary means of transmitting the religion are through the family
  • muslims are people the practice islam
  • The word "muslim" means one who submits to the will of god, regardless of his/her race
  • .6% of U.S. Adults follows Islam
  • There are 2 main sects pf islam- Sunni and Shiite
  • One of their main differences is in their beliefs about who were the leaders following the death of the prophet muhammad
    • 5 pillars of Islam
      1. Shahadah-the muslim profession of faith-what they believe in done 2 twice a day
      2. Salat (daily prayer) is a prayer ritual; preformed 5 times a day by all muslims over the age of 10 ( they face the kaaba)
      3. Sawm (fasting) is abstaining each day during ramadan
      4. Zakat (almsgiving) is giving money to the poor (2.5% savings)
      5. Hajj- the pilgrimage to mecca that all physically/ financially able to muslims should make at least once in their lifetime- go to kaaba and circle 7 times, pray, go to a spring and drink water, have a feast, throw stones at 3 pillars, shave head, and run hills

Islamic Law

  • Sharia law outlines laws for muslims and is based from the Quran
  • Many African and middle eastern countries laws are based on sharia law
  • 5 major crimes
    • Theft
    • Highway robbery
    • intoxication
    • adultery
    • falsely accusing others of adultery

Food laws

  • Similar to kosher laws
  • no alcohol, pork, blood...
  • Food must be prepared similarly to jews

Issues facing islam

  • Radical islamic group
    • ISIS
    • Al-Qaeda
  • Racial profiling in US
  • Women's rights
