Monday: Took notes on the 5 major religions of the world

  • Animism 
    • Was the belief that everything living and nonliving had a spirit 
    • was the major religion before Christianity and Islam and others came to be 
    • Animism in early civilizations was often combined with ancestor worship 
      • Religion - Organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, practices , and worship that centers on one or more gods 
      • Religion was created to keep people in line and to give them hope
  • Judaism
    • was the first monotheistic religion in history
    • Some believe that it dates back to Adam and eve
    • Established around 1800 B.C. as part of a covenant between god and Abraham
    • The Torah is the first five books of the bible and contain the laws and teachings of Judaism
    • The Ten Commandments are the foundation of Judaism 

Tuesday: Took more religion notes 

  • Judaism continued
    • worship in synagogue 
    • worship is led by rabbi 
    • symbol is the star of David 
    • manora is another symbol
    • many Jews make the pilgrimage to the wailing wall in Jerusalem
    • Temple has stood for 500 years
    • Praying at the wall signifies being in the presence of the divine 
    • Believe in one god, who created the universe but with whom every Jew can have a personal relationship 
    • They await the earthly king, the Messiah
    • Kosher foods are food that meet all criteria of the Jewish law 
      • Cannot mix meat and milk 
      • the use of cooking utensils that had been previously used on non-kosher foods
      • the type of animal it is 
      • Leviticus states: that Jews may eat all animals that have cloven hooves and chew their cud 
      • No Camels, Hyrax, rabbit, pig, whales, dolphins
      • allowed: cows, goats, sheep, antelope, deer, sharks, eels, octopus, squid, chicken, duck, milk, cheese, turkey 

Wednesday: More Jewish Notes and started Christianity notes 

  • Judaism Continued 
    • antisemitism - the hate of the Jewish people 
    • Holocaust killed 2/3 of European Jews 
    • Israel established after WWII as a homeland for Jewish people, which led to much conflict
  • Christianity 
    • Roman Catholicism - Europe and Latin America 
    • Eastern Orthodox - Russia 
    • Protestantism - United States 
      • Easter is the most important christian holiday
      • first Christians were Jews 

Thursday: took Hinduism Notes

  • Hinduism 
    • Hinduism - defines as dwellers by the Indus river
    • No known founder of Hinduism
    • Believe that gods can take many but all form one universal spirit called Brahman
    • No single Hindu Doctrine
    • 3 holy books are the Vedas, Upanishads, and the Bhagavadgita 
    • Believe in the reincarnation of the soul
    • Dharma - rules and laws to live by
    • Four stages of life for the Hindu people
      • Ages 12-24 you get educated and trained 
      • Ages 24-48 you get married, raise a family, make money, get involved in many things 
      • Ages 48-72 you separate yourself and let go your earthly bonds and desires 
      • at age 72 you end ties to the outside world and get rid of your worldly possessions
    • Main 3 gods
      • Brahma
      • Vishnu
      • Shiva
