Week of November 6th to November 10th

Monday-

Bradley Gasoline Runabout and  Model A were cars before the model T. William Harley and Arthur Davidson had motorcycles, buses cam in the 20's. Airplanes were about too. 

Problem- Lack of safe drinking water: Solutions- chlorine was added to water to help eliminate disease. Scientists proved that the diseases came from the water not just the air in the 1800's. Federal regulation of drinking water quality began i 1914 which continued to strengthen over the decades.

Disease was common in the streets-solutions: horses were replaced, added chlorine to water, introduction of indoor plumbing, George A. Waring Jr.- he organized modern recycling, street sweeping and garbage collection.

Crime- solution: organized police force, police became full time employees of the city-not volunteers. the the late 1800's all major U.S. cities had municipal police forces in place. 1911- fingerprints are first accepted by U.S. courts as a reliable means of identification.

Problem fire- solution: better buildings- full time paid firefighters-Cincinnati became the first full time paid fire fighters in the US.

Problem-Poverty due to low pay at work-solution: Labor Unions- minimum wage laws, shorter hours, child labor laws. 

Segregation- separation of races. Literacy test- to see if people could read and write. poll tax- had to pay to vote. Grandfather clause- if your grandfather could vote then you could if not you couldn't.

Tuesday-

Jim Crow Laws- separated whites and blacks. Plessy v ferguson-1896 separate but equal. separate and unequal in reality. Lynching and violence- KKK lots of intimidation kept blacks from voting. 

Wednesday-

Progressive Era 1890-1920 this era was not progressive for African Americans
