Domestic Policy vs. Foreign Policy

Key terms

Diplomacy- Skill of managing international relations

Imperialism- Policy of expanding a countries powers.

Militarism- A belief that a military should be made and used to get your point across 

Nationalism- Loyalty to a nation. Patriotism 

Sphere of influence- Where a country has unofficial authority over another country or area

Protectorate-Where a stronger country controls/protects a weaker country

Arbitration- Where two groups have an argument and they settle it between a third party source.

Old diplomacy

 How we dealt with other countries. Ended/changed in the late 1800's

Non-interventionist-don't want to get involved with foreign affairs. The US did not intervene in foreign affairs, especially Europe's 

Isolationist- The US acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations

Passive and reactive- The US waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly.

Weak army and navy- George Washington wanted the US to stay out of alliances. He was a big influence in our country so his word was taken as very good information. He wanted to focus on America.

Wednesday-

New Diplomacy

Imperialistic- going out and conquering territory to create an empire. Big imperialists ALfred Mahan, Henry Cabot Lodge, Teddy Roosevelt 

Strong army and navy- Built up our navy and army 

Interventionist- especially in Central and South America

Monroe Doctrine- 1823 We didn't want Europe in the western hemisphere

Strong Nationalism- Having strong pride and confidence in one's country.

Why did the US and other countries look to imperialism?

The western frontier was settled in 1890. 

Bring military power and prestige to your country. Naval bases and refueling stations.

For natural resources as well as opening new markets to sell your goods(trade)

Belief in cultural superiority- White Man's Burden.

Mckinley- educate and uplift and civilize and Christianize them.

Taft- Help our little brown brothers 

We bought Alaska from Russia in the 1860's

Queen Liliuokalani was the last queen of Hawaii. She wanted Hawaii for Hawaiian.

The US took over Hawaii by force. On August 12, 1898. We took it over for many and resources.

Spanish American War

 By the late 1900 Spain was a dwindling empire. They had a little bit of land in Africa and some islands before this war.

 The US had a lot of interest in Cuba but Spain didn't want to sell it to the US. We tried to buy it in 1854.

Cubans had been revolting against Spain frequently. Every decade since 1860, they wanted independence. 

The Yellow Press- the newspaper people would stretch the story a lot farther than the truth. They made it a lot worse than it really was. William Hearst. Joseph Pulitzers
