Diplomacy- how the United States deals with other countries

Imperialism- generally stronger countries take over smaller countries or take over banks and the economy

Militarism- building up a military and being a bully to other countries

Nationalism- loyalty and devotion to one country, patriotism 

Sphere of influence- one country "bullying" or influencing another informally 

Protectorate- a country that is controlled and protected by another

Arbitration- settlement by a neutral party

Old Diplomacy- (How the United States dealt with other countries)

1. Non interventionist- not intervening in any foreign affairs

the U.S. did not intervene in any foreign affairs, especially Europe's

2. Isolationist- being alone and separate from other countries

the U.S. acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations

3. Passive and reactive- not getting involved in any conflicts

the U.S. waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly

4. Weak army and navy

George Washington warned the U.S. to just focus on America and stay out of European problems
