Monday - Finished Ch. 9 Test 

Tuesday - Domestic Policy vs. Foreign Policy. Domestic - Focusing on America, helping common Americans. Foreign - Governments strategy in dealing with other nations

Key Terms 

Diplomacy - How the United States officially deals with other countries 

Imperialism - A policy of extending a countries power through diplomacy or military force 

Militarism - Building up a military and military strength to protect national interest 

Nationalism - Patriotism, pride, loyalty 

Sphere of Influence - When a country has unofficial authority over another country; overpowering 

Protectorate - Relation of a stronger nation controlling a weaker nation

Arbitration - The settlement of a dispute by a neutral party 

Old Diplomacy - How the United States used to deal with other countries (1790-late 1800's) (Goal : Focus on America and stay out of other foreign countries problems)

  1. Non interventionist - the US did not intervene in foreign affairs, especially Europe's 
  2. Isolationist - the US acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations 
  3. Passive and Reactive - the US waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly 
  4. Weak Army and Navy - Not aggressive  

Wednesday - 

Empire - An extensive group of states or countries under a single supreme authority; kingdom 

  • Spanish Empire 
  • Russian Empire 
  • Mongol Empire 
  • British Empire

New Diplomacy - How the United States now deals with other countries 

  1. Imperialistic - conquering territory to create an empire (Alfred Mahan, Henry Cabot Lodge, Teddy Roosevelt) 
  2. Strong Army and Navy - 
  3. Interventionist - becoming more involved in other countries affairs; especially in Central and South America 
  4. Strong Nationalism - having strong pride and confidence in one's country

 

Imperialism became very common with the major powers of the world 

Countries that were most powerful in 1900... Great Britain, Germany, France, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Russia, U.S, Japan, Turkey, Japan

Thursday - Why did the US and other countries look to imperialism? - more military power, resources, money, western frontier was settled, naval bases and refueling stations, belief in cultural superiority

Alaska was bought from Russia

Queen Lili - Last Queen of Hawaii. She wanted to make Hawaii for Hawaiians. We forced our way into Hawaii for money, sugarcane plantations, missionary work. August 12, 1898 Hawaii became a state. 

The Spanish American War - It was splendid because it was short, we won and few died. By 1900, Spain was a dwindling empire. The US had been interested in Cuba for a long time. Cubans had been revolting against Spain frequently wanting independence. Many felt sorry for the Cuban people.

What caused an increase in tension between the US and Spain? - Yellow Press - Newspapers reported the brutality of the Spanish General Weyler (Stretched the truth) William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer - Newspaper guys who would stretch the truth

Causes of Spanish-American War? - The USS Maine sinking, The Yellow Press, Butcher Weyler and his treatment of Cubans in the concentration camps, The De Lome Letter, Jose Marti's destruction of US property in Cuba-making it look as though Spain did it, To help Cubans get independence
