Week of November 23-27

Monday: John and I discussed forum posts. We also started on The Spanish American War.

Tuesday: We continued learning about chapter 10.

Wednesday: We finished Chapter 10 today. We have a 2 hour early out. We also picked new forum post leaders. We watched a video on the history of Thanksgiving.

10-2 The Spanish American War

  • By 1900, Spain was a dwindling empire
    • Philippines, Guam, Cuba, Puerto Rico and a few colonies in Africa(Morocco and Western Sahara)
  • The US had been interested in Cuba for a long time
    • US tried to buy Cuba in 1854
  • Cubans had been revolting against Spanish control wanting Independence
  • Many felt sorry for the Cuban people
  • What caused an increase in tension between the United States and Spain
    1. In 1895 civil war broke out in Cuba between Spain and the Cubans
    2. The conflict was described "bloody and brutal"
    3. Newspapers(Yellow Press)  reported the brutality of the Spanish General Weyler
      1. exaggerated the truth
  • Causes of Spanish-American War 1898
    1. The USS Maine sinking

    3. Butcher Weyler and his treatment of Cubans in the Concentration camps

Chapter 10:3- Acquiring New Lands

  • Cuba
    • In 1898, Spain gave control of Cuba to the US with the Treaty of Paris
    • In 1902, the US granted Cuba its independence as promised with the Teller Amendment
    • the US retained the right to intervene to preserve Cuban independence and stability with the Platt Amendment
    • the US got control of Guantanamo Bay as well, a naval base we still have control of today
    • in 1934, the Platt amendment was repealed

      • "Bay of Pigs Invasion" we tried to invade Cuba and over throw Castro
  • The Philippines
    • Emilio Aguinaldo declared independence from Spain- he was ally, then enemy

    • In 1935, the Philippines was granted Commonwealth status
    • Japan tried to take over- We beat them
    • On July 4, 1946, the Philippines attained its independence

    • By the late 1800's, it was looking as if China would be carved up like Africa had been
    • China wanted to prevent this from happening
    • John Hay- Open door policy
      • the Us holding back major powers of the world freeing China
      • Guaranteed China's Independence
      • Trade for all countries

Chapter 10:4- America as a World Power

  • Teddy Roosevelt
    • assumed presidency after McKinley was killed
    • Roosevelt the Peacemaker
      • ended the Russo-Japaneses War in 1905
      • Wan the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts
      • Panama Canal
  •  Panama Canal
    • France had started constructing a canal but gave up due to costs and disease
    • In 1903, Us buys France company's route for $40 million
    • Before starting, US had to get permission from Colombia which controlled Panama
      • Colombia refused to allow US entry
      • With support from the US, Panama revolted against Colombia
      • On November 3, 1903, Panama declared Independence from Colombia
      • US and Panama the signed canal deal where US would pay $10 million and a annual rent of $250,000
    • Construction
      • One of the biggest engineering undertakings ever
      • had to fight diseases
      • soft, volcanic soil made it difficult to remove
      • over 43,000 workers
      • 5,600 workers died
      • Cost US $380 million
      • Opened on August 15, 1914
  • The Roosevelt Corollary
    • It was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine
    • Said that the US would be the police officer between Latin America and Europe
    • The US would use force to protect interests in Latin America

      • We have a huge military and we can crush you

    • Using the Us gov't to guarantee loans to foreign countries by US banks and businesses

    • US banks were in control of many businesses in Latin America
    • Us said it was needed to keep European powers out of Latin America

    • US owned a lot of mines in Mexico
  • President Woodrow Wilson
    • Wilson's ethical and religious beliefs also influenced his foreign policy
      • practiced "missionary diplomacy"
      • used a lot in Latin America
