Protecting Social Welfare 

  • Set up settlement houses for poor 
  • Opened libraries 
  • sponsored education classes 
  • Opened swimming pools 
  • Set up soup kitchens 
  • Slum brigades - teach immigrant 

Promoting Moral Improvement 

  • Prohibition (outlawed the making and shipping and selling alcohol 
  • Carrie Nation 
    • Would go into bars with a knife and slash beer cans 
  • Why band alcohol? 
    • Because when men drink they get abuse and did some stuff (Women pushed for this) 
    • Factory workings pushed for it too because they were showing up drunk and just didn't do their job 
  • Women's Suffrage 

Creating Economic Reform(Benefit factories workers) 

  • Regulation of business(Sherman Act -- break up trust) 
  • Child labor laws 
  • Women and men working hours reduced 
  • Workmen's compensation 

Muckrakers

  • Muckrakers played a big role in bringing reform 
  • Investigative journalist 
  • Exposed the problems of society 
    • Examples 
      • Upton Sinclair --- The Jungle---- meatpacking 
      • Ida Tarbell -- Exposed the ruthless methods of the Standard Oil Company 
      • Lincoln Steffens-- exposed corruption in government

    • Initiative - a bills originated by the people rather than lawmakers 
    • Referendum- when voters accept or reject the initiative 
    • Recall - enabled voters to remove public officials from elected positions
