Week of November 16-20

Monday: We discussed forum post topics. Connor presented his part for 9-4. We worked on Chapter 10.

Tuesday: We acted out our key terms, and we worked on Chapter 10.

Wednesday: We worked on Chapter 10.

Thursday: We researched on Hawaii and Alaska.

Friday: We discussed Alaska and Hawaii and how the US got them as states. I am a forum post leader.

    • a stronger country protects or looks over a smaller country

    • the use of a middle person to settle a dispute

    1. the US acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations

    1. the  US waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly

Foreign policy used to be isolationism

    We follow this because George Washington told us to stay out of affairs

    We had many pressing matters at home (reconstruction, etc.)

    2. becoming more involved in other countries affairs
    3. Monroe Doctrine- statement to Europe to stay out of the Western Hemisphere

  • Imperialism became very common with the major powers of the world

    • Soviet Union (Russia)
    • France
    • Germany
    • Italy
    • Japan
  • Why did the US and other countries look to imperialism?
    • brings military power and prestige to your country
    • Naval bases and refueling stations
    • $$$$- For natural resources as well as opening new markets to sell your goods (trade)
    • Belief in cultural superiority- White man's Burden
      • McKinley: "to take them all and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them."
      • Taft: "We must help our 'our little brown brothers' on the Philippines."
