Monday- Went over forum posts for our class. Connor finished his presenting. Mr. Bruns start presenting Ch. 10

Democrats Win 1912 

  • Reasons Woodrow Wilson won the election
    • Supported small business and free market competition
    • Only had captured 42 popular votes but he won an overwhelming electoral votes

Taft and Roosevelt Split 

  • Taft called Roosevelt a "dangerous egoist 

Ch. 10- America Claims an Empire 

  • Section 1- Imperialism and America
  • Section 2- The Spanish American War
  • Section 3- Acquiring New Lands
  • Section 4- American as a World Power 
  • Domestic Policy vs Policy Policy 

Key Terms 

  • Diplomacy- the profession, activity, or skill of managing international relations, typically by a country's representatives abroad
  • Imperialism- A policy of extending a countries power and influence through diplomacy or military force 
  • Militarism- The belief or desire of a government or people that a country should maintain a strong military capability and be prepared to use it aggressively to defend 
  • Nationalism- Loyalty to your country (Feel patriotic to your country) 
  • Sphere of influence- A country or area in which another country has the power to affect the developments although it has no formal authority 
  • Protectorate- A country is controlled or protected by another (more powerful) country
  • Arbitration- The use of an arbitrator to settle a dispute

Old Diplomacy - Policy of isolationism 

  • 1. Non-interventionist
    • The U.S. did not intervene in foreign affairs, especially Europe's
  • 2. Isolationists
    • The U.S. acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations 
  • 3. Passive and reactive
    • The U.S. waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly 
  • 4. Weak army and navy 

New Diplomacy 

  • 1. Imperialistic 
    • Going out and conquering territory to create an empire
    • Alfred Mahan (look up), Henry Cabot Lodge, Teddy Roosevelt 
  • 2. Stronger army and navy
  • 3. Interventionists- especially in Central and South America 
    • Becoming more involved in other countries affairs 
    • Monroe Doctrine- A statement to Europe to stay out of the Western Hemisphere (The Americas)
  • 4. Strong nationalism
    • Having strong pride and confidence in one's country

  • Imperialism became very common with the major powers of the world

    • Great Britain

*Most countries were independent by 1830

Why did the US and other countries look to imperialism?

  • Brings military power and prestige to your country

  • Naval bases and refueling stations

  • $$$- For natural resources as well as opening new markets to sell your goods (Trade)

  • Belief in cultural superiority- White Man's Burden

    • McKinley: "to take them all and to educate the Filipinos, and uplift and civilize and Christianize them."

    • Taft: We must help "our little brown brothers" on the Philippines

Friday- Talked about how/why the U.S. got Hawaii/Alaska
