Tuesday - Brandeis Brief - By treating your workers better, the business will be more efficient; Direct Primary - Allows people to vote for a president; Initiative - have to get so many votes; Referendum - gave more power to the people,, vote; Recall - can get a recall vote to get a person out of office.
Section 2 - Before the Civil War, Women were expected to stay home. After the Civil War, needed women. 70% of women employed were servants, slaves, immigrants. By 1900, 1 out of 5 women worked. Women then started getting jobs in offices, stores and schools. Men jobs became women's jobs. Women had higher education than men and went to colleges. Organizations were made to help women learn... Labor Unions, Hull House - Less fortunate, sanitation, English, hygiene. Educated women apply skills to social reforms. NAWSA(1890)- National American Woman Suffrage Association - Created by merging. NACW(1896) - National Association of Colored Women - Character of colored women, womanly job; Women Reform - 1910- Women''s clubs turned into reform groups, half a million women were involved. Educated women helped strengthen reform groups. Women were gaining the right to vote, safer working conditions, better treatment, safer food/drug products; Roosevelt supported this. Susan B. Anthony - Illegally voted during president election in 1872. She was then fined $100. She fought for women rights and civil rights. Susette La Flesche - Native American writer, presenter, interpreter and artist of the Omaha, Nebraska spokesperson for Native American Right, helped pass the Dawes Act. Mary Church Terrell - African American leader, She founded the NACW, pushed for womens rights, helped establish the NWACE.
Wednesday - Section 3 - Square Deal = Equality. The state leaders wanted Theodore to be McKinley's vice president to get him out of state office. When McKinley was assassinated six months later, Roosevelt was put into office. 1906 Meat Inspection Act - Conditions were disgusting so the act called for sanitary restrictions and made it more safe. 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act - Stopped the purchase of buying contaminated foods and medicines, All foods and medicines must have truthful labels. Roosevelt cared about the environment. He established 150 national forests, 5 national parks, 18 monuments, protected 230 million acres of land.1902 Coal Strike - 140,000 coal miners demanded a 20% raise or else they would go on strike. Result: Compromised and a 10% raise and 9 hour work day was set. Railroad Regulations and the ICA - Didn't allow wealthy railroad owners from planning to raise the prices in a business area. 1906 Hepburn Act - Limited free railroad passes, bribery was common with free passes. Federal Power - system the divides up power between a strong national government and smaller less powerful government. Trust Busting - group of companies that work together to control an industry reducing competition, government activities aimed at breaking up monopolies and trusts. Newlands Reclamation Act - To get irrigation to the farmers.
Thursday - Section 4 - He supported more of Joseph Cannon, Republican Party. Bull Moose Party - progressive party, formed when Taft was nominated, wanted a square deal. Payne-Aldrich Tariff - Campaigned on lowering tariffs, this was passed and lowered rates, the senate proposed it and increased rates. A compromise was signed by Taft leaving many people upset because he did the opposite of what he promised. Disputing Public Lands - Taft arranged conservation land, was advised to take public lands for water conversations, formed Glacier National Park. Underwood Tariffed tariffs on imported goods, encouraged manufacturers to compete. Standard Oil Company - believed they had to much power, divided them into 7 parts, unfair local competition.
Friday - Tariffs - Tax on imported goods. 1912 Election - 4 people running for president - Eugene V. Debs, Woodrow Wilson, William Howard Taft, Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson wins. Woodrow Wilson brought segregation back into D.C (one of the darkest parts), Adamson Act - created 8 hour work days. Federal Reserve System - A bankers bank. Controls the amount of money in circulation(inflation and deflation), controls interest rates.
