The US had been interested in Cuba for a long time
         - US tried to buy Cuba in 1854
Cubans had been revolting against Spain frequently wanting independence from Spain
Many American's felt sorry for the Cuban people

What caused an increase in tension between the US and Spain
1.) in 1895 civil war broke out in Cuba between Spain and the Cubans
2.) The conflict was described "bloody and brutal"
3.) Newspapers (yellow press) reported the brutality of the Spanish General Weyler
-American newspapers were clearly pushing the nation towards intervention in the Cuban situation
        - William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer- lied about all the things happening in Cuba in the newspaper so they could sell their newspaper

Causes of Spanish - American War 1898
-the USS Maine sinking
-yellow press
-Butcher Weyler and his treatment of Cubans in the concentration camps
-The De Lome Letter
-Jose Marti's destruction of US property in Cuba-making it look as thought Spain did it
-to help the Cubans get independence

General Valerinao "The  Butcher" Weyler- was sent down to Cuba made concentration camp to keep the Cubans under control
Jose Marti- was a Cuban nationalist.  He knew that Cuba would never win with out the help of the US.  Destroyed property of white rich males plantations and made it                        look like Spain did it so the US was get involved.
William Randolph  Hearst- lied in the newspaper so that we would go to war with Spain
Joseph Pulitzer-
They yellow Press- instigated the war,
United the general public to want war with Spain,
Made people feel sorry for the Cubans
McKinley did not want war with Spain, but gave into the people with the war.
The De Lome Letter- De Lome Letter was written to tell McKinley that he is weak for going into war.
The USS Maine - Feb. 15th 1898- was sent to Cuba to protect the resources in Cuba.  Then it got blew up and the US thought that Spain blew it up and it was the biggest                             reason why we went to war with Spain.

Declaration of War and the Teller Amendment
-On April 25th, 1898 the US declared war on Spain
-Discuss imperialists vs anti-imperialists in US
-Teller Amendment was added to the declaration of war against Spain
-Guaranteed Cuban independence after the war was over
-so the US just took other islands

Fronts in the Spanish - American War
-Philippines
                  - a little on the Philippines.
                  - Commodore George Dewey
                 - had a strong navy because it was new
                 - Battle of Manilla Bay
                   -the battle didn't last long
Emiio Aguinaldo- was an allie but then an enemy.   AFter the Spanish American War, the US took over the islands for 20 million in the the 1898 Treaty of Paris

Cuba
-Teddy Roosevelt was a leader during the war

John Hay " A Splendid Little War" - short, won, low death rate

Treaty of Paris - 1898
brought an official end to the war
Spain gave Cuba independence
Us got control of the Philippines and Guam and Puerto Rico

Misc.  The US Army was not prepared to fight this war- the Navy was excellent
Roughly 3000 US soldiers died in the war- Only 385 battle deaths 2500 died due to disease
lasted April 25-August 12th 1898
The US became an empire for the first time in our history

Chapter 10- 3 Acquiring New Lands

Puerto Rico current status
-late 90's they wanted to stay as a territory but in 2012 they asked to be a state.

Cuba
in 1898, Spain gave control of Cuba to the United States with the Treaty of Paris.
In 1902 the United States granted Cuba it's independence as promised with the Teller Amendment.
The US retained the right to intervene to preserve Cuban independence and stability with the Platt Amendment- saying that if Cuba had problem the US has rights to come in and intervene.  And have a Naval base of Guantanamo Bay
IN 1934, the Platt Amendment was repealed

Cuba today
- is communists
- allied with the Soviet Union because the US and the Soviet Union were enemy's in 50's and 60's
- people wouldn't be allowed to get anything from Cuba and couldn't travel there. Now some people can go to Cuba on for certain things and get trade.

The Philippines
What to do with the Philippines
- make them a territory

Philippine- American War
-The Philippine- American War broke out after the Filipinos realized that the US would not give them independence
-it ended with American control over the islands
12,000-20,000 Filipinos soldiers dead, 200,000 - 1.5 million Filipino civilians die some contend US committed genocide.  4,165 US soldiers dead

Current status of the Philippines
-in 1935, the Philippines was granted Commonwealth status
-Plans for independence over the next decade were interrupted by Would War II
-Got independence on

China
- By the Late 1800's it was looking as if China would be carved up like Africa had been.
-China wanted to prevent this from happening

The Boxer Rebellion- they revolted against the European powers.  They lost. and it was a perfect time for the European countries to get involved.
John Hay - Open Door Policy - We wanted China to be free trading rights for all countries.  China should be open for all countries to trade with and gave China independence.

Chapter 10-4- America as a world power

Roosevelt won the noble peace price prize for ending the Russo- Japanese War.  Japan defeated Russia.

Panama Canal
-easier for trade and travel and save money.
-We bought it from France.  We had to get permission from Colombia which controlled Panama.  They wouldn't let us.  They didn't give it to us because of what what happened in Cuba.
-The US told Panama revolted against Colombia to get independence. They got independence and the US got to make the Panama Canal.
-Most Latin America didn't like America because we like bullies and took things from them

What made building the canal a challenge
- had to fight disease
 - difficult to remove soil
- cost US 380 million dollars
-Huge project.
-Had to deal with Colombia not being happy about America.

The Roosevelt Corollary
- It was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine (A warning to Europe from America telling them to stay away )
-Said that the US would be the police officer Between Latin America and Europe
-The US would use force to protect interests in Latin America

"Speak Softly and Carry a Big Stick" -- Big Stick Diplomacy (military power)
-Ex. = The building of the Panama Canal

The Great White Fleet - had white ships and sent them all over the world to like scare the people of other countries.

Dollar Diplomacy- President Taft
-Using the US government to guarantee loans to foreign countries by US banks and businesses
-Economic imperialism
-US banks were in control of many businesses in Latin America
-US said it was needed to keep European powers out of Latin America
-"Substitution dollars for bullets" =we would invest money in countries instead of going to war.  So we can keep them in control so European countries get involved
