  2. Teddy Roosevelt
    1. Square Deal
      1. What Teddy Roosevelt called his platform for presidency
      2. Wanted everyone to have a fair and equal chance (square deal)
    2. Enforced Sherman Anti-trust Act
    3. Roosevelt was known as the "trustbuster"
    4. Passed the Elkins Act 
      1. 1903 (no rebates)
      2. Couldn't give rebates to big companies--had to be fair to everyone
      3. Benefited farmers against railroads
    5. Passed Hepburn Act
      1. 1906 (ICC set max railroad rates)
      2. Benefited farmers against railroads
    6. Helped settle the 1902 Coal strike in which miners got better pay and a nine hour workday
    7. Meat Inspection Act-1906
      1. Government started inspecting to meat to make sure its safe
    8. Pure Food and Drug Act-1906
      1. Made sure everything had labels and that food didn't have drugs in them
    9. Newlands Act-1902
      1. Sold western land and made dams which allowed irrigation
      2. Important for farmers
    10. Didn't do much for African Americans
    11. Conservation measures
      1. Set aside 148 million acres of forest reserves
      2. 1.5 million acres of water-power sites
      3. 50 wildlife sanctuaries and several national parks
      4. Conservation--planned management of natural resources, involving the protection of some wilderness areas and the development of others
  3. William Howard Taft
    1. Passed the Payne-Aldrich Tariff
      1. Reduced tariffs on some things (tax on imported goods)
      2. Raised tariffs on other things
    2. Broke up many trusts including the Standard Oil Company in 1911
    3. !6th Amendment passed 
      1. Started the income tax
    4. Taft wasn't well liked
