Monday- Got grade sheets, talked about the Iowa Supreme Court coming and went over the forum posts. Started Chapter 9\
Tuesday- Mr. Bruns was gone today so we watched an episode of The Men who built America.
Wednesday- Went over Mr. Bruns power point.
Thursday- Went and listened to a judge from the Iowa Supreme Court.

Ch. 9.1
-Define the Progressive Era, why it started and it goals.-
The Four goals of the Progressive-
1st- Protecting Social Welfare- Aimed to help the poor. Opened libraries, sponsored things, built swimming pool, and handball courts. YMCA- The young men's christian association. Set up settlement houses for poor- (homeless shelters today), soup kitchens, sponsored education classes, Slum brigades- teach immigrants. Salvation Army and the YMCA helped the poor people.
2nd-Promoting Moral Improvement- Reformers felt that morality not the work place was the key to improving lives of the poor. Banning alcohol. Carrie Nations was the women who really pushed for prohibition and to ban alcohol. WCTU-Woman's Christian Temperance Union pushed for voting rights. They entered saloons and protested, would sing and pray in the saloons.
3rd- Creating Economic Reform- moral reformers sought to change individual behavior. Journalists who wrote about the corrupt side of business and public life in mass circulation. There was a major unbalance in income and how people lived, many turned to "socialism", regulation of railroads. Regulations of Business, Child Labor Laws. Women and men working hours reduced. Workmen's compensation- if you got hurt on the job, they would pay you while you get better. Capitalism- Economic system. means of production are privately owned. People own and control business. Chance to go from poor to rich. Socialism- government owned, such as school and post offices.
Muckraker-were journalists who exposed the bad things in our country. They played a big role in bringing reform. They are Investigative journalists.
4th- Fostering Efficiency- a lot of progressive leaders put their faith in experts and scientific principles. People had to work like machines on the assembly line. Scientific management to increase efficiency was used in factories.
Cleaning up the Gov.
Reforming Local Government- natural disasters, splits up parts of cities, eventually rebuilds, created city councils.
Reform Mayors (this is a single person)- Prog. Reform W/O changing how gov. was organized. More fair tax structure, lower prices for public transportation, focused on abolishing private utility companies
Reform Governors- Robert M. La Follette, big business, three terms Wisconsin governor, didn't mean to smash corporations, wanted to drive them out of politics
Protecting Working Children- unskilled tasks, low wages, immigrates, rural migrants sent their kids to work, viewed kids part of economy, prone to accidents due to fatigue, in 1904 evidence was collected about working conditions
Efforts to limit working hours- supreme court case Muller v Oregon, poor working women more economically unstable than large corporations, women needed state protection from powerful employers, made law limiting women to 10 hour work day
Reforming Elections- some cases ordinary citizens won state reforms, Oregon to adopt the secret ballot
Direct Election of Senators- the legislature had chosen its own united states senators. progressive pushed for the popular election of senators 17th

-What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?-States adopt secret ballot, direct Primary- a way which the US selects who will be the Democratic and Republican candidates , Initiative-a bill originated by the people rather than lawmakers. Referendum- when voters accept or reject in initiative(bill). Recall- enabled voters to remove public officials from elected positions.

-The 19th amendment- gave the women the right to vote
