Week of Nov. 11/9-11/13

Monday- went over forum post, and started Chapter 9-2 and 9-3

Tuesday- Watched a short video about Veterans Day and how it came to be.  Continued with Chapter 9

Wednesday- continued with Chapter 9

Ch. 9.2

-Describe the major social changes that affected women during the Progressive Era.-
Most women stayed home and were house wifes.  70% of women were employed in 1870.  
Many more women were getting an education, many became teachers, help push for the passing of the 18th and 19th Amendments to the US Constitution-Prohibition. 1848- Seneca Fall Declaration: Plea for the end of discrimination against women in all spheres of society, including the right to vote.
Women in the Mid-late 1800's and early 1900's pushed for four things:
1st Abolition of slavery (13th)
2nd temperance (18th).
3rd Women's suffrage (19th)
4th child Labor laws

During WWI women took men's jobs showing the country that they could do hard work.  WWI interrupted the campaign for women's rights.
On Aug. 20th, 1920 was the day the 19th amendment was passed.  

-Describe women's push for suffrage(voting) and the passing of the 19th Amendment.-
They tried to be able to vote in three different ways 1st, State Legislature, 2nd -amendment laws, 3rd congress vote
Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Idaho was the first states to allow women to vote.  

NACW- National American Colored Women fought for rights. 

-Describe some women who were leaders in the push for suffrage and temperance.-
Susan B Anthony  and Elizabeth Cady Staton were the leader of the NAWSA- National American Women suffrage Association lead by these two women.  Black men could vote before women.  Jeannette Rankin- worked to win suffrage in Washington State.  Was elected the first women in Congress in 1916.  Voted against war in WWI and WWII (only vote).  

Ch. 9.3

-Describe the major accomplishments of Teddy Roosevelt as President.-
He went to Harvard, was a cowboy, historian, Police Commissioner, Naval Secretary, Governor of New York, Vice President, President, Peacemaker, Mighty hunter all the time.  He was bubbly, energetic, cared about people. Broke up trusts "Good trusts" vs. "bad trusts".  Helped settle the 1902 Coal strike in which miners got pay and a nine hour workday. Passed the Elkins Act (1903- no rebates) and Hepburn ( 1906- ICC set max RR rates) which required railroads to be fair and just in their prices and practices. 

-Bully Pulpit- convincing people to vote for what he wanted. 

-Square Deal- He wanted to give people a fair chance for everybody

-Breaking up strikes-
140,00 coal miners went on strike, Roosevelt intervened and called bother sides to the white house, Roosevelt threatened to take over the mines. After all the threats the min operators and the workers submitted difference.  Benefited the workers

-Regulating railroads
Roosevelt's real goal was federal regulation, the Hepburn Act of 1906 limited the distribution of free railroad passes. Roosevelt boosted the governments power. 

-Regulating food and drugs
Meat inspection act 1906-, and pure food and drug Act 1906

-Conservation
Stop shutting down forests, destroying prairies, dumping waste in river, and coal mines everywhere. Conservation measures, set aside millions of acres of land or: nation Parks, land for resources and wildlife conservation areas. Newlands Act 1902- sold western land made dams which allowed for irrigation  

-Policy towards African-Americans
He didn't do much for civil rights, he supported a few African Americans.  W.E.B. Du Bois- founded NAACP ( National Association of Advancement of Colored People), Began the Fight for Civil rights.  Booker T. Washington- also fought for civil rights 

In 1901 he became the youngest president, he was young governor from New York.  he went to Harvard College, where he boxed, wrestled, and became a smart man.  Before his presidency he was in the U.S. Navy

Ch.9.4

-Describe the major accomplishments and problems of William Howard Taft's presidency
William Taft was president after Theodore Roosevelt. Was not a very initiative leader, produced few accomplishments during his term.  Not popular with the American public.  Roosevelt personally picked him.   From Ohio, went to Yale, Secretary of War, governor of the Philippians.   

-Payne-Aldrich Tariff- Compromise between Sereno E. Payne and Nelson W. Aldrich. Payn's proposal was designed to lower tariff rates (tax on imports/ exports).  Conservative Republicans like Aldrich wanted to protect high tariff rates.  The compromise Payne- Aldrich Tariff Act had the effect of reducing tariff rates but also enacted a corporation tax.
reduced Tariffs but that also lead to other higher tariffs  
Put higher tax on products in different countries, so that people will buy the products produced by Americans.  

-Land disputes-  Taft took some land and sold it to big business that Teddy set aside.  

-Breaking up trusts- broke up Standard Oil Company in 1911.  

-16th Amendment- The congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without appointment among the several states, and without regard to any census or enumeration.  Allowed the Income Tax 

-Policy towards African-Americans- Booker T. Washington, he ended school segregation in New York when he was the governor of New York.  He 

-Break-up of the Republican Party- in 1912 Taft's conservative policies regarding conservation as well his targeting of J.P. Morgan through the Sherman Antitrust Act, declared his intent to run for president.  After unsuccessfully attempting to gain the Republican nomination, Roosevelt created a separate Progressive Party

-Describe the outcome of the 1912 Presidential Election- Taft and Roosevelt split up the Republican party.  Roosevelt and Taft split the vote..  Due to problems with Taft, the Republic and split into old-guard republicans and progressive republican.  TR did not get the Republican nomination so he decided to run as a third party candidate in the Progressive Party. 

Not as energetic and well liked as Roosevelt, Not good at using the Bully Pulpit. Promised to lowere Tariffs but actually increased many with the Payne - Aldrich Tariff upsetting progressives. Appointed Wealthy lawyer Richard Ballinger to Secretary of the interior who removed land TR set aside for conservation
