The Korean Conflict: The Forgotten War
Origins
- Korea was invaded and ruled by Japan from 1910 – 1945
-After WWII, Korea was split into two North (USSR) and South (US) at the 38th parallel
- An election was going to be held to eventually unify Korea
- The United Nations held an election in 1948
-
Kim II-Sung was the founder of North Korea
The US left the Korea peninsula and the North wanted to invade the South. They got permission from Japan and the Soviet Union. They got the go ahead and they invaded in June 25, 1950. In Sept. 14, 1950 North Korea had most of the peninsula. Then on Nov. 25. 1950 the United Nations (McArthur) invaded and pushed all the way close to the boarder of China. China thinks that the United Nations is going to invade them. So they invaded in July 27, 1953 and we moved back to the 38 parallel line
United Nations Police Action
-United nations Security Council voted to send troops to help South Korea
-US, Great Britain, France, China and the Soviet Union were permanent members that could veto the “police action”
- Why didn’t the USSR and/ or China (Taiwan) veto this proposal? – China was represented by Taiwan, and the USSR was being boycotted
MacArthur Removed
-MacArthur was removed from command by President Truman on April 11, 1951
-Why?
-McArthur was succeeded by General Matthew Ridgeway.
-We was able to slowly drive back the enemy to the 38th parallel
-The rest of the war involved little territory change and lengthy peace negotiations.
-even during the peace negotiations combat continued
A demilitarized zone (DMZ) was established around it, which is still defended today by North Korean troops on one side and South Korean and American troops on the other
