Monday: We watched Girl Rising

Tuesday: Took the Western Africa group quiz, and continued presentations

Racism:

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    • Established segregation of public schools

    • Unconstitutional origin of the Civil Rights movement

  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    • Congress overrode President Johnson's veto of the bill with a nearly unanimous vote from the republicans

    • The can't declares people born in the US  are officially citizens regardless of their race and color

    • If granted the same rights of while citizens to all male american born citizens such as the right to buy and sell property sue and be sued give evidence in court

  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    • No discrimination based on color, nationality, origin, gender, race, or religion

    • Proposed by JFK, passed by LBJ

  • Civil Rights Act of 1965

    • Act forbids racial discrimination in voting

    • It was aimed to abolish legal barriers that prevented African Americans from voting

    • 15th Amendment prohibits denying the right to vote based on race, color, or previous

  • Civil Rights Act of 1968

    • Fair Housing Act protects the buyer or renter from discrimination regarding the sale rental and financing of housing

    • The bill was a case of a strenuous debate of the senate

  • Racism in the classroom

    • African american statistics rising

    • Westernised school curriculum

    • Europe And Ethnocentrism

    • Stereotypical white teachers

    • Over referral to special education/criminal programs

Friday: Filled out central Africa map, talked about current events, and then continued with presentations

Racism:

  • Racism in schools

    • More colored people are stereotyped in schools for being “not as smart as white kids”

    • 3x more suspension of colored people

      • 16% black, 5% white

  • Racism in Entertainment

    • Speaking characters are mostly white

      • 10.8% are black, 4.2% Hispanic, 5% Asian, 3.6% mixed races

    • Top 100 movies of 2012 have 76% white characters and 24% other races

    • 93% of Oscars go to White people

  • Racism in Workplaces

    • Harassment level has doubled from 1970s

    • 6,977 cases of Harassment were reported in 2007

    • Home Depot paid $125,000 settlement-racial remarks on black worker

    • More % of blacks and hispanics feel like they are treated unfairly at work

    • Many black managers quit their jobs

    • Wages- White people get $21, other races get $15 or less

    • College educated blacks make 80% of what white people make hourly

  • Reasons for Racism

    • Racist person in family or friend group can influence others

    • Stereotypes of criminals, lazy, unintelligent, special needs

    • Put frustrations out on others who are “different”

    • “Take jobs from government”
