Week of May 8 - May 12

Monday - Work on decades project.

1950s - 

Music - Elvis Presley was the most popular artist.

New cars were about $1,500 and the cost for college was about $600. Average income was $3,216. 

McCarthy communist witch hunt, Churchill elected back into office, Polio vaccine, DNA structure discovered, cigarettes cause cancer, Montgomery bus boycott, Launch of Sputnik - space age. NASA founded, Castro becomes dictator of Cuba, Brown vs. the board of education of Topeka, Kansas (started the process of desegregation), 22nd amendment was made so the president could only have 2 terms.

1960s -
Nixon vs. Kennedy. Kennedy won the election by 100,000 votes. 49.5 percent for Nixon and 49.7 percent for Kennedy.
Johnson vs Goldwater - 61 percent for Johnson and 39 percent for Goldwater.
Nixon vs. Humphrey vs. Wallace - 43 percent for Nixon and 42 percent for Humphrey.
1960 - First televised prsidential debate. Birth control approved by the FDA.
1961 - Kennedy gives Man on the Moon speech. Berlin Wall built. Freedom riders challenge segregation on interstate buses (northerners that would ride on southern buses).
1962 - Famous escape from Alcatraz. Cuban Missile Crisis.
1963 - First women in space, Martin Luther King jr. gives "I Have a Dream" speech, JFK Assassination, 16th street Baptist Church Bombing.
1964 - Civil rights act passed, Nelson Mandela sentenced to life in prison.
1965 - Malcom X assassinated, Los Angeles riots, NYC great blackout, U.S. troops sent to Vietnam.
1966 - Mass Draft protests, National organization for women.
1967 - First superbowl, Thurgood Marshall becomes the first African-American US supreme court Justice.
1968- Bobby Kennedy assassinated, My Lai massacre.
1969 - Arpanet (precursor to internet), Neil Armstrong becomes the first man on the moon, Sesame street airs.
Scandal - Monroe and Kennedy supposedly spent a night together. People think that the Kennedy's might have killed her.

1970s - 

First Rap song was Rappers Delight by the Sugar Hill Gang.

Watergate scandal - Hotel in Washington D.C. and it is an office complex. The democratic national headquarters was ran in the Watergate. Five people broke in and planted bugs. Two guys thought that it was a more important story and so they traced them that it was a committee called CRP that wanted to elect Richard Nixon. Everyone around Nixon starts to resign. In one of the hearings, Nixon said that he was innocent. Nixon gives them edited transcripts of the tapes. We do not know if he ordered the break in. Nixon resigned instead of being impeached.

1972 Election - Fixed election. They looked at the candidates for the democratic party. They put together an organization called the dirty tricks campaign. During one of Muske's fundraiser, they ordered a bunch of flowers and pizza. 

1980s - 

Iran-contra Affair - Iran and Iraq were at war, Iran wanted weapons from United States. In exchange, Iran would investigate 6 American hostages in Lebanon. US would send money to the contras, Reagan did this without approval from congress. 

Pro-life movement, Iran-Iraq war (Iraq invaded Iran, and Iran won), Space shuttle Challenger exploded, US stock market plunges, Berlin wall falls.
