Week of May 7th - May 15th

Monday - Berline Blockade/Airlift - Forced the western allied powers to abandon the post WWll, The airlift kept life going in West Berlin for 11 months

Berlin Wall - Divided Berlin and was put up during the early years of the Cold War, The communist built the wall to stop the eastern germans that fled to the west 

Bay of Pigs Invasion - Castro overthrew Fulgencio Batista, Many Cubans fled Cuba because they disliked Castro, Plan was to invade Cuba but didn't go as planned, We tried to bomb their air force but Castro knew of these plans, We surrendered in less than a day 

Cuban Missile Crisis - 13 day military and political standoff, A spy plane saw missile assembly in Cuba, JFK was informed, US was being threatened, He planned to put up a blockade so the ssoviets couldn't send in additional equiptment, The deal was Khrushchev would remove missiles from Cuba if we would not invade Cuba, Oct 28th - Crisis ended 

McCarthyism - Investigations opened on communist, McCarthy searched for communist using The Central Intelligence Agency 

Tuesday - House Un-American Activities Committee - The house of representatives that investigated allegations communist. Called citizens to testify in front of Congress. They were formed because of suspected communism after the great depression. 

How the Cold War ended - Mikhail Gorbachev came to power, More freedoms (freedom to vote, freedom of speech), Economy failing, Berlin Wall fell, Control Eastern Europe, War in Afghanistan 

Amendments 

22nd Amendment - Limited the number of times a president can be elected to two terms; A person who serves more than two years of a term that was started by a different president cannot be elected more than once. 

23rd Amendment - Gave Washington D.C electors in the Electoral College

24th Amendment - Expansion of voting rights; Poll tax removal so African Americans could vote 

25th Amendment - President removed = Vice President fills in, New President appoints new Vice President, President can temporarily give power, Allows removal of President 

26th Amendment - Lowered voting age to 18 

27th Amendment - Delayed laws affecting the salaries of Congressmen until after the next election of representatives

Harry S. Truman - Fair Deal - Health Insurance, Minimum wage, Expanded Social Security, Equal Rights by Law; CIA - Faily Newspaper to Inform the President 

Dwight D. Eisenhower - Federal Highway Act 1956 - $30 Billion for 41,000 miles of Interstate Highways, Employed more than 10,000 workers, Built after Germany's highways

Thursday - John F. Kennedy - Inauguration Speech ("Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country"), Peace corps 

Lyndon B. Johnson - The Great Society (End poverty, Reduce crime), National Origins Quota System, Immigration and Naturalization Act (New immigration policy)

Obama's Birthday - Conspiracy started by Trump with a series of tweets affirming Obama was born in Africa.

Malcolm X - The Nation of Islam, Assassinated in New York City, NY 

MLK Jr. - Shot by James Earl Ray 

Bobby Kennedy - Shot in LA, Shot by Palestinian Sirhan

Monday - Brown vs Board of Education - Seperate schools combined together

The Letter of Birmingham Jail - Was put in jail for protesting when he was told not to, Only in jail for one week, Wrote a letter about why he was in jail , Nonviolence

Selma - Selma to Montegomery march was a series of marches in the state of Alabama, 54 mile mark, Alabama's state troopers attacked the group with wielding whips, nightstick, and tear gas

Tuesday - Women in the Military

Title 9 - Law that prohibits discrimination of gender in any education program or activity that is federally funded 

FMLA - Family Medical Leave Act - Allows family members to take of time maternity, paternity, adoption, sick family member, chronic conditions 

Equal Pay - Women are paid less than men at every education level, For every dollar a man made, a women still only made 77 cents

DADT Act - Banned LGBTQ community from joining the military, Obama repealed this, Trump has now disqualified transgender to serve in the military 

DOMA Act - Defense of marriage act, Allowed states the refuse to recognize same-sex marriage 

Transgender Bathroom - Obama signed off saying anyone who identifys as a man or woman could use the bathroom of their choice; Trump took back what Obama said and said Man parts = male bathroom and women parts = female bathroom 

Changing Hollywood - Hollywood had LGBTQ diversity, Trying to change

Ellen DeGeneres - Came out on her show, Became the first gay character on a prime time network 

Wednesday - Iraq War - US soldiers found Saddam Hussein in a 7 foot hole near Tikrit, Began trial in Oct 2005 for crimes against his people and mass killings, US troops fight militants, Obama plans to remove some troops from Irage by Aug. 2010

9/11 - al - Qaeda, 2,996 died, 6,000 wounded, 4 planes were hijacked, 2 crashed into the world trade centers, 1 crashed into the pentagon, the other in a field 

Patriot Act - Uniting and strengthening America by providing apporpriate tools required to intercept and obstruct terrorism

Afghan War - Started after 9/11, 2nd longest war

Thursday - Trumps Plan - Wants victory, Find a solution, Taliban and other Terrorist groups, Troops 

Islamic State of Iraq and Syria - Started in 2004, Started as part of Al Qaeda, A terrorist group, Radical anti-western militant group, Wanted to establish an independent Islamic state 

Fighting for and what they did - To make Allah's word supreme in the world, Restore the power of Islam, 143 attacks, 29 countries, 2,043 killed\

Isis became popular for their acts of violence 

Obama's Fight - U.S started airstrikes against ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria. 

Trump's Fight - Followed with Obama's plans, Cut ISIS forces down to 3,000 left in Iraq and Syria, Trump increased airstrikes 

Current ISIS - ISIS is now weakened both militarily and financially

Korean War - June 25th, 1950 - 75,000 North Korean soldiers cross the 38 parallel kicking off the Korean War, By July the US had entered the war, Was not a war 

Stalemate - Both sides were willing to call a ceasefire, Both were willing to have a demilitarized zone, The US didn't want to give back POWs

Korean Armistice Agreement - Peace talks began in 1951, The talks were to release pows, In 1953 the armistice was signed, South Korea didn't sign the agreement, Both sides retreated 1 mile from the border 

Modern Day - Tension, In 2006 North Korea got nuclear weapons, North Korea made promises, Both sides are working towards officially ending the war 

Vietnam After WW2 - Ho Chi Minh declares freedom 1945, Divided in half at the 16th parallel, Seeks to be accepted but truman ignores him 

Friday - SEATO 

Early stages of the war - Universal militarism is imposed on the people, 20,000 Viet Cong attack, 1962 bombing starts 

The Jungle War - Operation flaming dart, Operation rolling thunder begins, US troops grow to 500,000 

Operation Flaming Dart - In 1965 Viet Cong attack multiple US bases

Operation Rolling Thunder - Sustained aerial bombardment, 4 goals - boost South Vietnam moral, stop Vietcong, destroy northern transporation, halt flow of men into the south, Most intense air battle of coldwar 

US Pulls Out - Operation Dewey canyon last operation, Troops reach 543,000, Pull out 25,000 men in 1969, 1973 count to 50 US pulls out 

Operation Dewey Canyon - Sweep of the people's army
