Monday: Presentation

Tuesday: Vietnam Conflict

1. Beginnings: 

  • France had control over it. 
  • Japan took it over in WWII. 
  • Ho chi Minh was the leader.
  • Goals: Stop Communism
  • They assumed independence
  • Geneva Conference- 1954, set up elections to unify the country by July, 1956

2. Escalation:

  • US slowly got involved in Vietnam 
  • started with the deployment of military advisors to the South Vietnamese army
  • Started Using special forces (Green Berets) 
  • Then regular troops were sent for defensive purposes only. 
  • Finally in 1964, regular troops were used for offensive combat
  • Escalation was all about more troops. 

3.  Gulf of Tonkin:

  • Giving president Johnson to wage war. 
  • Only two people in Congress voted against it. 

4. Tet Offensive

  • Made the war really unpopular
  • United states helped South vietnam
  • People started questioning why are we there?

5. Anti- War

  • Why were many people against the War? 
  • 1. Tet offensive
  • 2. Pentagon Papers
  • 3. Injuring/ killed innocent people
  • 4. Supporting a bad government
  • 5. The power of the press

6. Vietnamization+ De- escalation: 

  • Nixon called for Vietnamization
  • "Peace with Honor" 
  • Gradually pull US troops out and train ARVN to take our place in fighting the North. 
  • Expanded the war into Laos

7. Paris Peace Accords

8. The End

How did people get out of serving? 

1. Went to Canada or Sweden

2. Went to college

3. Got married

4. Medically unfit for service

5. Joined the National Guard or Peace Corps

6. Claimed to be homosexual

7. Being rich

Wednesday: Last regular school day. Finished 2000 Presentation and started with 2009 presentation. 

Thursday and Friday: Semester test
