Monday: Filled out Africa maps, went over some current events

Mental Illness:

Suicide-

  • Mood changes, anger, talk of self harm, withdraw from friends and family

  • 400 people in Iowa committed suicide in 2013

  • On average 1 person dies every 22 hrs of suicide in Iowa

  • 9th leading cause of death in Iowa

 

Lack of Proper Health Treatment for Diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa:

  • 2 doctors/ 11 nursing- midwives per 10,000 people

  • ½ of Africans don’t have needed medicine

  • People rely on Traditional African Healers used more than modern cures

  • Countries train medical doctors

 

Tuesday: Studied for Africa quiz tomorrow and then continued with presentations

Lack of Healthcare:

Diseases:

  • 1/10 people have HIV/AIDS

  • 68% out of all people with HIV live in Sub-Saharan area

  • AIDS takes around 1 million lives

  • Malaria kills 1 African child every 30 seconds- leading cause of death in children under five

  • Malnutritional diseases kill lots of people due to lack of food

Maternal, Newborn, and Child Deaths

  • Huge shortage of midwives and nurses

  • Over 1 million babies die before they are one month old

  • Over 3 million babies die before they turn 5

  • 880,000 stillbirths every year

  • Women in Africa don’t get to go to the doctor when they are pregnant

  • Reasons for maternal and newborn health complications:

    • Birth difficulties

    • Newborn illnesses

    • Childhood infections

    • Malnutrition

    • HIV/AIDS

    • Most dangerous time is in the first 28 days

  • Only 11% of the world--24% of the world’s diseases

  • >1% of global health spending

  • Millennium Development Goal

 

Wednesday: Took northern Africa group test and continued with presentations

Extreme Poverty:

  • Low money and not being able to support yourself and/or others

  • $1.90 a day- can only buy really cheap food

  • Poverty rate has gone down by about 33% since 1990

  • 15% of people in America are in poverty as of 2015

  • Extreme poverty is the highest  in Africa- live on subsistence farming (farm to grow food for their family)

  • Food pantries can really help these people

  • 1 billion children live in extreme poverty in the world

  • 22,000 children die each day

  • 750 million lack clean water



Thursday: Filled out the Western Africa maps and talked about current events, then continued with presentations.

Better Energy Alternatives:

  • Energy generated in ways that don’t deplete natural resources

  • Solar energy

    • More sustainable energy source

    • Save a lot of money

    • Cost of maintenance is less than $200 a year

    • Only take about .6% percent of America’s land to power the whole country

  • Wind energy

    • Wind turbines takes KE of the world

    • Converts it into mechanical power

    • 31% of Iowa’s energy is generated from the wind



  • Geothermal

    • Produced from heat of the Earth

    • Renewable

    • US produces the most

    • Saves 30-70% in heating mode

    • Saves 20-50% in cooling mode

  • Hydroelectric

    • Flowing water that is captured to make energy

    • Renewable

    • Environmentally friendly

    • Generates about 10% of the nation's energy

  • Ocean Energy

    • Much larger scale of use

    • 3 types

      • Tidal energy

      • Wave energy

      • Ocean thermal energy

    • Another form of hydropower



Friday: Went over current events, and practiced Western Africa, then continued with presentations.

Racism:

  • Discriminatory or abusive behavior towards members of another race

  • Can affect their health, feelings, study habits, jobs

  • Race: the classification of humans based on ancestry, genetics, and physical traits

  • Ethnicity: A social group that posses a common and distinctive culture, language, or religion

  • Nationality: a country in which a person belongs to weather by birth or naturalization

  • Institutional Racism: A form of racism expressed by social establishments such as banks, courts or law, schools, and other governmental organizations.

  • Individualized Racim: A type of racism in which a person practices discrimination based on race preference
