Tuesday: Presentation from Italy

-Major events that impacted their country between WWI and WWII.

  • March on Rome
  • October 28th, 1922
  • Mussolini led members of the fascist party (Blackshirt) to Rome to seize power of Italian government
  • Italy Joining the Axis power
  • Rome- Berlin Axis October 21, 1936
  • Stated the all countries of Europe will one day rotate around the Rome- Berlin axis 
  • Francisco Franco- General- Spanish Civil War- Fascist leader

-Discuss basic facts: alliance, total casualties, total cost, war goals, etc

-Tell us about their leader(s) during WWII

  • Benito Mussolini
  • Organized a fascist revolution in Italy
  • Came to power 1922
  • Turned Italy into a legal dictatorship in 1925
  • Founder of Fascism
  • Allied with his friend Adolf Hitler
  • Allies invade in 1943 and he is voted out of power and arrested
  • Rescued from prison by Germany special forces 
  • Giovanni Messe
  • Famous Italian General, Political and Field Marshall 
  • Considered the greatest general of WWII

-Discuss the impact of their Homefront and propaganda and what it was like in their country during the war

  • The Italian propaganda was used to unify the nation and create a modern Roman Empire
  • Was also used to make the enemies

-Discuss major battle strategies

  • Invasion of Italy
  • Stalin wanted a second front opened in Europe
  • Allies knew they couldn't invade France in 1943
  • Churchill thought of Italy as the "soft underbelly of the Axis"
  • Germany knew this and prepared to defend Italy without their help

-Discuss major battles that the country was involved in

  • Operation Torch 
  • British troops from the east through Libya 
  • US and British troops landed in Morocco and Algeria and advanced west
  • Pinned the Germany and Italian troops into the small county Tunisia
  • Hurt the Italians badly and they lost all their African colonies 
  • Battle of Britian
  • Italy sightly participated in the battle 
  • They sent around 200 aircraft carrying 1,500 lbs of bombs
  • The Mediterranean 
  • Crucial to the success of the Italian forces
  • Fought for control of the trade
  • Axis never took full control pf the Mediterranean
  • couldn't stop the Allies from moving men and supplies trough the Suez Canal to help the war effort
  • Battle of Taranto
  • British bi planes torpedoed ans sank much of the large ships in the Italian surface fleet in harbor at Taranto in November, 1940
  • Italians lost
  • Battle of Cape
  • March 1941
  • Italians lost
  • British had 4 light cruiser lightly damages and 3 killed

  • Country got destroyed
  • Mussolini was kicked out of power
  • the Nazi Government still maintained control
  • The postwar situation was not very good
  • Italy nearly became a Communist country
  • US created the Marshall Plan to help rebuild Italy's economy after the war

-Discuss the impact WWII had on the country
