Week of March 5- March 9

2/5- movie summary presentations

2/6- no school

2/7- finished summary presentations and started WW2 weapons presentations.

  • PPSH-41- moble machine gun used for front lines. Made by Russia.
  • V2 Rocket- made by Germany. Did a lot of damage and could go a long distance. A big missle. 
  • Dora and Gustav Rail Cannons- world's largest cannon used. Shot 42 times. Used against anit-aircraft fire.
  • MP40- created by Germany and used by Axis powers. More modern used in front lines. 
  • M1 Garand- created by Germany. Loads from bottom. Most used assult rifle because of long range.
  • The Poisoned Dart Bomb- top secret weapon. Carried needles dipped in poison. Only worked if in open area. Not successful.
  • Suicide Bomb Dogs- put a bomb on a dog and rope in its mouth. The dogs would go under the tank and a timer would go off.
  • Katyusha Rocket Launcher- 16 rocket launchers on the top of the car. Used by Russians. 
  • Bike- motercycle with tracks. Carried cannons.
  • Mines- naval mine put in the water. A naval ship runs into it and it damages ships. 
  • X-class Midget Submarine- went into places a normal subarine couldn't go into. Had four people in it. Invented by Japan. 
  • M1A1 Carbine- invented in the US. Used by people in tanks and jumping out of planes. Most produced gun. 
  • Flamethrower- burned people to death.
  • Thompson Submachine Gun- made by Americans for Marines. Was not very popular at first.
  • Lee Enfield- a British gun that was shorter, lighter, and easier to use. More accurate aiming and easier to load. 
  • Type 100- Japanese submachine gun. Only mass produced machine gun by Japan. Very uncommon for soldiers. Only higher ranking soldiers.
  • MG 34- uncommon by Germans because it was modernly made and difficult to put together. Very touchy machine gun.  Stationary not mobil.
  • German G/43- sniper rifle used by Germany. Based on G 41.  Semi-automatic rifle. 
  • Bren Infantry LMG- made by the British. Light stationary machine gun. Successful but not widely commun.
  • Hand Grenade- introduced by American soldiers. A pin releases and then throw it after a few seconds then it would go off.
  • Knives- trench knives used mainly as tools. Had brass nuckles so you could punch people.
  • Atomic Bomb- Fat Boy bombed Nagasaki.  Little Boy bombed Hiroshima.
  • Aircraft Carrier- big ship that carried planes closer to battle sights. Important to America against Japan because we did not have many big islands.

2/8- listened to FDR's war speech and took notes.

  • FDR's War Speech-
    • Pearl Harbor was not the only area Japan attacked on December 7.
    • The Japanese Government also launched an attack against Malaya, Hong Kong, Guam, Philippine Islands, Wake Island, and Midway Island.
  • Douglas MacArthur- one of the best Generals. He did not want to leave the Philippines but was forced to leave and go to Australia. 
  • Bataan Death March-
    • Americans and Filipinos on the death march, May 1942.
    • Up to 10,000 Filipino and 650 American POW's died during the march. 
  • Doolittle's Raid- April, 1942
  • Battle of Coral Sea- first turning point in the Pacific.
    • Ended in a stalemate
    • Considered to be more a US vicotory as it was the first time Japan's advance had been stopped.
