Tuesday- Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931: they attacked because they needed resources that Manchuria had. Japan traded with U.S. a lot but there were high tariffs on the United States so world trade stopped rapidly. They take over Manchuria easily. Japanese invasion of Manchuria: the league of nations condemned the action but could not enforce its authority as it had no military force, the message that was sent to japan to the aggressive countries was that a major power could get away with using force because great Britain and France did not want war, Japan dropped out of the League of nations shortly after the invasion. China incident (July 1937)- Japan attacks China and it is very successful. china was to japan as the soviet union was to Germany: because both countries bit off more than they can chew and china/soviet union came back against Japan/Germany. Rape of Nanking- late 1937- Early 1938- a mass killing of Chinese people (300,000), mass raping of Chinese women and girls, mass looting and arson, some in japan have denied that the military killed the civilians for no reason, still causes tension between the two countries today, there was a war crimes trial after the war to try Japanese soldiers for participation, overall throughout WWII Japan killed almost 6,000,000 people (Chinese, Indonesians, Koreans, Filipinos ,Indochinese, western prisoners of war, etc.) Quarantine Speech (1937)- Japan, Germany, and Italy needed to be stopped and the peaceful nations of the world need to come together and stop them. Panay incident (December 1937): american gunboat attacked on river in China by Japan, 3 US troops killed and 45 wounded, Japan said it was an accident, apologized, and paid $$, worsened US and Japanese relations. Soviet- Japanese neutrality Pact- The USSR and Japan signed an agreement to not fight one another in April 1941, Japan considered breaking this once Germany (their ally) invaded the USSR in June 1941, but did not, and The USSR broke this treaty when they declared war on japan in August 9, 1945. Admiral Yamamoto: he was the one the created the plan to bomb Pearl Harbor. Later Japan sent a contract that tried to get the United States to trade with Japan again. Thursday- Basics of Pearl Harbor Attack. There were 3 attacks planned for the Pearl Harbor incident and the third one never happened because Japan felt like that they achieved what they wanted in 2 attacks. Bombers bombed and fighters fought. Japan didn't attack the city where the people were because they just wanted a deal being made not to hurt anyone. USS Arizona memorial-the names of the Arizona's dead are engraved on this white wall. Pearl Harbor propaganda: this propaganda made a lot of people want to join the war and lie about their age to get in, also got people to buy war bonds. Remember Pearl Harbor- this was on of the most patriotic songs during WWI, it was played at family and religious gatherings throughout the country. Why did Japan Attack Pearl Harbor? after Japan invaded French Indochina in 1940, US stopped trading oil with Japan, Japan signed the soviet-Japanese neutrality pact in April, 1941 guaranteeing that Japan and USSR would not go to war, japan realized they need US trade to be successful in war, the only was to force US' hand was to hit them hard in a surprise attack forcing them out of the war, japan knew that this place was a huge risk but it thought it was the only way to defeat the US, plan backfired instead Japan "Awoke the sleeping giant". Backdoor to War conspiracy- FDR was desperate to get to war against Germany and help Winston Churchill, and then Japan started to try and make peace deals. December 8, 1941 president signed declaration of war. FDR' war message- pearl harbor was not the only area japan attacked on December 7, They attacked Malaya, Hong Kong, Guam, Philippine islands, Wake island, and Midway island. MacArthur was fired by president Truman because he did the opposite of using atomic bombs on china. Bataan Death March- was in 1942 and they were forced to march with little water/food, in very hot temps, lots of disease. Up to 10,000 Filipino and 650 American POW's died during the march. Doolittle's Raid in April 1942- US got revenge on Japan, it was a bombing on Japan and Tokyo, the planes didn't have enough gas to get back so it was almost a suicide mission.
Friday- Bataan Death March in Philippines in 1942. island hopping- .... Doolittle's raid was for getting revenge but by doing this plan there were some deaths and loss of planes. Turning point of the war was the Battle of Coral Sea (in the pacific). Japan lost that battle and if they would have won they would have gone for Australia. This battle was carried out by airplanes and aircraft carriers. The US won against Japan, and that was the first time in a long time that Japan won (stalemate). A month later during the major turning point of the war there was the Battle of Midway in June 1942. We sunk a lot of japans ships, aircraft carries, and planes. Japan surrendered in August 1945. We won by MAGIC- They decipher codes from the other military. Guadalcanal in August 1942 - February 1943. Kamikazes- suicide planes that the Japanese mostly used. Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Philippines. MacArthur's return to the Philippines. MacArthur was confident but kind of cocky, He was later fired because he did listen to Truman.
