Week of March 26th to March 30th

Monday-

Hitlers Rise to Power- He was appointed Chancellor in 1933, President Paul von Hindenburg dies shortly after and Hitler dissolves the Weimer Republic... Early Actoins- Drops out of the league of nations, starts rearming Germany, Rearms the German Rhineland area.

Anschluss with Austria- 1938 Hitler took over Austria and made them united.

Sudetenland Crisis- 1938 "Re-uniting German speaking peoples". Munich Confernece- Neville Chamberlain-Great Britain, Adolf Hitler-Germany, Benito Mussolini-Italy,

Hitler was given the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia, Hitler promised that he was done taking over territories, HItler wanted to re-unite all German speaking people, Became known as the Policy of Appeasement. Winston Churchill opposed Appeasement "An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last." Hitler Takes over all of Czechoslovakia in March of 1939.

Czech President Hacha's Meeting with Hitler March 1939- Hitler yelled at the Czech's president and he fainted and gave his country away to Germany, 

Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact- Russia gave raw materials to Germany in exchange for money and weapons, Both agreed to stay neutral if the other entered the war, secretly agreed to invade and split Poland. germany would get the western half and USSR the eastern half, Russia would get Finaland, Estonia and Latvia and Germany would get Lithuania. The World was in Shock, Poland was stick "between a rock and a hard place" Hitler thought it would force Great Britian and France to bakc out of their promise to help Poland if attacked.

German/USSR invasion of Poland-Blitzkrieg- September 1, 1939

Tuesday-

 Blitzkrieg-lightning- Air force attacks enemy front-line and rear positions, the air planes waht to make it hard to communicate, infantry would attack at the same time. Tanks would go inland as far as possible, the infantry wanted to attack there flanks in order to link up. Wanted to incircle the enemy. The Germans would then link up and surrond the enemy.

Sitzkrieg-The Phony War- Winter 1939/40, the Phony War ends in the spring of 1940, Hitler started taking over the Western part of Europe.

French and German Plans for the Battle of France 1940- Germany would attack through Belguim, the French troops made a huge line on the border of Belguim, France's "Impenetrable" Maginot Line- They had railroads, telephone lines, and areas that tried to prevent tanks from going through.

Miracle of Dunkirk-The Germans pushed the French, British, and Belguim to the beaches on Dunkirk, the military couldn't evacuate everyone because the ships were too big. Citizens with smaller boats would bring troops to the big military boat. 340,000 people were evacuated.

June of 1940- Germany advances and wins over France, Hitler made France surrender in a train car.

France was divided- German occupied France, Vichy France, Free french- occupied France would rebel against German powers, Free France fled to Great Britian and were the people we allied with. Vichy France was ghe people who were with the Germans.

Axis Invasion of the Balkans (Yugoslavia) 1941- Germany ended up taking them over.

Wednesday-

 Nazi Goals for battle of Britain- Destroy the Royal Air Force(before invasion was possible-hopefully by 9-15), Attack and Destroy the British Navy, Attack British Troops, Once Air control was gained, the invasion of Great Britian would begin, **Germany never succeededd in achieving #1, **German bombers did so poorly against the RAF that they started bombing at night only, **Great Britain was aided heavily by the radar and Ultra. Operation Sea Lion- was the name for the planned invasion of Great Britain, but it never happened.

Luftwaffe-Herman Goering, he was the leader of the German Air Force.

In May, 1941, Germany decided to focus on attacking British ships and ports and thus stopped attacking cities. British losses-around 40,000 civilians dead, 46,000-139,000 injured. German losses- 3,363 aircrew and 2,265 aircraft, Britian won by the fact that Germany did not achieve their goals.

German Invasion of USSR June 1941-Operation Barbarossa 

Scorched Earth Policy-Stalin demanded this of the Soviet troops as they retreated- Destroy everything that you can't take with you, that way Germany cannot use anything of ours to their advantage.

Battle for Moscow- The capital of Russia, the Soviet Winter Counteroffensive, December 6th, 1941- April 30, 1942. The Russian winter sets in and make a huge turning point in the war.

Battle of Stalingrad- August 1942-February 1943- lots of casualties, Russians were better prepared, 1.8 million killed or wounded, 11,400 casualties each day, biggest defeat in the history of the German Army, Turning point on the Eastern front.
