Monday-

Hitler in WWI- Hitler was wounded twice while serving

Given a job to spy on the Nationalist Socialist German Workers Party (Nazi Party) for German military

Realized that they believed in things he did as well

Dropped out of the military and joined the Nazi Party and quickly rose to become leader

Hitler found out he had the power of speech and persuasion

Talked with his hands

Beer Hall Putsch (1923)-They tried to overthrow the government in 1923, served nine months (sentenced 5 years)

Trial of 1924- writes his book Mein Kampf during the time he was in prison (9 Months)

Hitler is appointed Chancellor in 1933. President Hindenburg dies shortly after and Hitler dissolves the Weimar Republic

Germany drops out of League of Nations, Starts rearming Germany, rearms the German Rhineland, Aschluss with Austria (1938)

Sudetenland Crisis (1938)- "Reunite German speaking people" Italy, Germany, France, and Britain attend, Czechoslovakia not invited (Munich Conference)

Hitler was given the Sudetenland area of Czechoslovakia- Hitler promised not to take over territories any further

That's what Britain and France wanted to hear- started making plans for war with Czechoslovakia

"Policy of appeasement" Chamberlain - "Peace for our time" 

Winston Churchill- Opposed Appeasement- knew that Hitler saw strength through force

Hitler takes over all of Czechoslovakia- March of 1939

Hitler's meeting with President Hacha (70 years old)- March of 1939 of Czechoslovakia - Hacha passes out

Nazi-Soviet Non-Agression Pact- signed on August 23,1939 - Russia gave raw materials to Germany in exchange for money and weapons

Both agreed to stay neutral if the other entered the war - secretly agreed to invade and split Poland, Germany would get west and USSR east

Russia would invade Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Germany would get Lithuania.

Nazi goals for Battle of Britain

1.Destroy the Royal Air Force

2. Attack and destroy the British Navy

3. Attack British Troops

4. Once air control was gained, invade Great Britain

Great Britain aided by Radar and Ultra (intercepting and deciphering German code)

Operation Sea Lion- invasion of Great Britain (never occured)

Royal Air Force- British Air Force- "Never Was so much owed by so many to so few"- Churchill

Luftwaffe- German AIr Force- Hermann Goering 

In May of 1941- Germany focused on attacking British ships and ports

British losses- around 40,000 civilians dead, 46,000-139,000 injured, German losses - 3,363 aircrew and 2,265 aircraft, Britain won by the fact that Germany did not achieve their goals

Operation Barbarossa (Invasion of the Soviet Union)- largest military undertaking in history (Germany vs Soviet Union)

lebensraum- living space for German people

Scorched Earth Policy- Stalin demanded that as they retreat eastward they burn resources

Battle for Moscow-

Germans are happy, hoping that war will be done by Christmas, but the Soviet Union launchesa Winter Counteroffensive from December 6, 1941 to April 30, 1942. The Russian winter sets in and is a huge turning point in the war. 

Battle of Stalingrad: August 1942-February 1943- More than 1,800,000 killed or wounded, more than 11,400 deaths each day, the biggest defeat in the history of the German army, the turning point of WWII.
