Week of March 20th-24th

Monday: Today we went over the Southeast Asia Map, talked about current events and continued with the powerpoint.

Obamacare-

-Republicans don’t like because it’s too socialistic

-Joni Ernst thinks people depend too much on the government and wants to find away to get people off the benefits

-Trump wants to repeal and replace Obamacare with something better and cheaper

Current plan-

  • Lower cost of health care

  • Negotiate cost of medicine drugs

  • Abolish state lines

  • Stay on parent’s plan until 26

  • Allows coverage for pre-existing conditions

  • Allow individuals to buy tax credits

Taxes-

  • 16th amendment to Constitution

  • Income tax is tax on the income

  • Graduated income tax is the more you make, the higher percent you pay

  • Fund government programs

  • Trump wants more money to go to the military even though that’s where most of it goes already

  • 2013- 3.5 cents went to education, 26.5 cents went to military

  • Schools get paid $6,500 per kid every year

Tuesday: (Early Out) Talked about current events and went on with presentation

Death Penalty-

  • Democrats- Opposed to it- not a deterrent and innocent people could be in jeopardy

  • Republican- Favor it- think it’s necessary and effective in deterring people from committing crimes

  • Concerns of Death Penalty

    • Executing innocent people

    • Racism targeting african americans and women

    • Expensive

    • Failure of deterrence

  • Almost $177 million spent on death row inmates each year

  • Average time on death row is 16.5 years

Wednesday: Took class quiz over Asia Subcontinent and Far east, talked about current events, and continued with powerpoint

Death Penalty-

  • Executions are on the decline not because crimes are going down, but because people are staying on death row longer

  • Methods of death are:

    • 87% Lethal injection

    • 11% Electrocution

    • 1% Gas chamber

    • 0.5% Hanging

    • 0.5% Firing squad

  • Was declared unconstitutional in 1972, bit it was reintroduced later

  • In violation of 8th amendment

Gay Marriage-

  • Democrat- favor gay rights and gay marriage

  • Republican- Oppose say that marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman- many consider it a sin, No procreation

  • June 26, 2015 same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states

  • Obergefell v Hodges- supreme court held a 5-4 decision- the right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples

  • Decision was based on Due Process Clause and Equal Protection Clause- 14th Amendment

 

Thursday: (Early Out) Went over South east Asia and Australia map went over current events and the power point

Gay Marriage-

  • Previous marriage law

    • Defense of Marriage Act-DOMA

    • Grants states to not recognize same-sex marriages that were granted under the laws of other states

    • Passed while Congress was mostly controlled by Republicans

    • Ruled unconstitutional- 2013 Windsor v U.S.

  • Religious beliefs- It is a sin and not a lot of religious people are pro gay marriage
