Monday- notes

Martin Luther

  • become a monk after surviving a violent thunderstorm
  • became a teacher
  • Was upset with the "indulgences" paying for the St. Peter Cathedral
  • 1 Bible was the central religious authority
  • 2 Humans may reach salvation only by their faith and not by their deeds
  • 3 All people with faith were equal. therefore people did not need priests to interpret the Bible for them

England Becomes Protestant

  • England broke away for political and personal reason, unlike Luther and Germany
  • King Henry secretly marries Ann Boleyn and then cuts her head off
    • She had a daughter Elizabeth and then three miscarriages
    • King Henry killed her for committing treason which is a lie
  • Jane Seymour
    • gave King Hengry the son he wanted
    • She died of complications of the birth of Edward

  • Son of Jane Seymour
  • 9 when he took the throne
  • Led by his advisors who were strong Protestants who passed the religion laws in England

  • Queen Mary
  • First Queen of England
  • Bloody Mary killed many Protestants

Thursday-  notes

Anabaptist

  • more people read the bible and started thinking the bible for themselves and what their perspectives are
  • think only adults should be baptized so they can understand why they are being baptized
  • Believe in separation of church and state
  • didn't believe in fighting in wars
  • persecuted by both catholic and Lutherans
  • became forerunners of the Mennonites and the Amish
  • influenced the Quakers and Baptists groups who split from the Anglican Church

Council of Trent

  • church's interpretation of the Bible was final
    • any Christian who subsisted his or her own interpretation was a heretic
    • Christians needed faith and good works for salvation
    • They were not saved by faith alone as Luther argued
