Monday-

Second Crusade

  • Caused by the first crusade and Crusaders ticked off the Muslims
  • Fall of the country Edessa
  • Kings marched across Europe
  • Crusaders failed to capture so they created a peace treaty for the Holy Land
  • Main goal was to recapture Edessa

Third Crusade

  • Caused by the capture of Jerusalem 
  • Christians wanted the holy land back so they had another crusade
  • Goals
    • Wanted to get the holy land
    • Recapture important cities
    • To undo Saladin's gains
  • 1189-1192
  • Leaders
    • Richard the Lionheart- king of England
    • phillip II of France
    • Frederick Barbarossa, emperor of the holy Roman Empire
    • Saladin leader of the muslims
    • Saladin was very prayerful
    • Christians didn't get Jeruselam but they did reverse Saladins expansion

Fourth Crusade

  • Goals
    • Win back Jeruselam 
  • Leaders
    • Louis I 
    • Ivan II Emperor of Bulgaria 
    • Bonicice leader of Thessalonica leader of the fourth crusade
    • Enrico he was blind and piety
  • Results
    • Crusaders came with a new strategy by they failed
    • Muslims won 
    • Crusaders got turned around now they are fighting Constantinople and the Byzantine
  • Who
    • Pope Urban III

Crusades 5-9

5th Crusade

  • Frederick II- Leader of the holy Roman Empire
  • 1212-1221
  • He wanted the Muslims out of the holy land

6th Crusade

  • 1228-1229
  • Fredrick II vs. Al-Kamil
  • Started as an attempt to regain Jeruslaem 
  • Started in Cyprus
  • Was outmanned
  • Treaty of Jaffa and Tell Ajul

7th Crusade

  • Wasn't started by a pop
  • King Louis IX or Saint Louis 
  • 1248-1254
  • Reeclaim Jersusalem

8th Crusade

  • 1270-1270
  • Louis XI of France for the Holy Roman EMmpire
  • Mamuluk sultan Baibars

9th Crusade

  • 1271-1272
  • Edward of England- leader for the Holy Roman Empire
  • Started Edward was on his way to the 8th cruase when  Louis XI was killed
  • Results 
  • 1302-303 Ruad Island
  • No more Crusade

Reconquista 722-1492

  • Kick muslims and non-christians out of SPain and re-conquer it for Christianity

Christians failed because they had a such a distance to travel and it cost so much

They got weaker as the crusades went on

Effects of the Crusade

  • shared power of the church
  • more business
  • more trading 
  • merchants increased
  • Muslism and Christian bitterness toward each other

Changes in Medievel Life

  • European population increased as people lived longer 
  • Food supply increased due to warmer tempeatures and increased farmland/ agriculture
    • Horses replaces oxen in the fields-much faster
    • Three field sysytem replaced the two field system 
    • 2/3 lands would be used for farming instead of hald more for food health increases people live longer
    • Trade started
    • People started taking last names
  • The Guilds
    • Precursor to labor union
    • Organization of individuals in the same businesses or occupation working to impore the econmic and social conditions of its members
    • Guilds set standards for quality of work, wages, and working conditions
  • Commerical Revolution
    • Businesses and trade expanded throughout Europe in 1200-1700's
    • Towns and cities were very important
    • trade routes spread
    • Banks and businesses were doing really well
  • Revival of Learning
    • Cruasdes could refine works from the Greek philopshers while going through the Byzatine Empire and the Muslim world including in Spain
    • This rekindled learning through out Europe
