Prohibition failed because people saw it as meddling people's lives. The Prohibition Bureau was underfunded. Organized crime became commonplace. Increase in violent crimes. Including homicides. Bootlegers are people who make and transport alcohol illegally. Named bootlegers because they kept alcohol in there boots. 

Friday-

Alcohol made secretly in home made stills. Serveral hundred ;eople a year died from drinking moonshine during the 1920's. In 1929 it is estimated that 700 million gallons of bear were produced

Speakeasies- somewhere that people ddrank alcohol illegally. They could be anywhere. A password had to be given in order to get in.

Came about as a result of Prohibition. Every major city had it's gang. Al Capone's bootlegging business in Chicogo made over 60 million a year. Due to gang violence only 19% of Americans supported Prohibition by 1925. Prohibition was repealed in 1933 by the 21st Amendment.

Science vs Religion- 

Scopds Monkey Trial- In 1925 Tenesee passed the first law making it illegal to teach evolution in school. The American Civil Liberties Union said it would defend any defend any teacher willing to break the law. John Scopes, biology teacher from Dayton, accepted. Scopes was arrested. cClarence Darrow has hired by the ACLU to defend Scopes. William Jennings Bryan was the special [rosecutor. Scopes did not deny teaching evolution. Trial was really about evolution in schools. Darrow called Bryan to the stand ans asked him questions about the Bible. Darrow made Bryan look foolish. Scpopes was found guilty and fined $100

In the early 29's the economy wasn't doing great. Later on it was doing well.

Buying on credit- "Buy now, pay later" Stock markets were booming.

High Tarrif Policy- Going back to normalcy. Not buying a lot of foreign goods. 

Cult of Domesticity- Ideal womanhood had four characters 1.Piety 2.Purity 3. Domesticity    4. Submissiveness-take on your husbands last name. Husband is in charge
