1930’s Topics:

1.-Causes of the Great Depression
1.) overproduction of goods
2.) under consumption of goods by consumers- no one was buying things because they were in debt
3.) agricultural slump in the 1920's due to overproduction - During WWI they had to make a lot of crops and they kept producing a lot and led to over produced products and Europe didn't want it.
4.) High protective tariff policies of the 1920's- The raised the tariff during the 20's and in the 30's.  Hoover raised the highest tariff in history.  We put a high tariff on foreign products so the other countries put high tariffs on their products and so nobody was buying foreign goods.
5.) Taxes benefiting the rich-rich got richer, poor got poorer
6.) The stock market crash- people lost millions of dollars, business and banks lost money
7.)Banks closing- cause and effect- because of the great depression banks would close down and people lost all their money.

The Vicious Cycle of the Great Depression

*Companies lose $$$ so they lay people off
* unemployment rate goes up and less people buy goods as income has dropped
* companies profits fall so they have to lay more people off
*cycle repeats itself

The Dust Bowl of 1935
- after planting so much crops for so many years, and not taking care of the soil and it was really dry a year.

2.-Impact the Great Depression had on people and our country
-Hoovervilles- shanty towns in the outskirts of cities.  Called Hoovervilles because they blamed Herbert Hoover for making them live like that.
-people lost their jobs
-they lost their homes and life savings
-business and banks shut down.
-Breadlines- people were giving away bread and people would wait in line to get bread.
-Created soup kitchens
-Hoboes Hopping Freight Trains- teens felt a burden to their parents and wanted to find jobs and support their family.
-Selling Apples- people would sell apples
-

3.-President Hoover’s attempt(or lack thereof) to help solve Great Depression

-Hoover struggled because he really believed in the Republican Philosophy, Trickle-down theory, Rugged individualism, Lazzie-fair, and he raised the tariff
-Hoover was viewed uncaring and as a President who did very little to help with the Great Depression

Boulder (Hoover) Dam
* Boulder Dam (now Hoover Dam) is located near Las Vegas
*The Hoover Dam project including the dam, the All-American Canal, the town of Boulder City, highways, railroads and various other works, cost $165 million to build
* Why do you think there were a lot of dam projects in the 1930’s??
